Hello, Muzzleloading adventurers. I have an Investarms percussion, short barrel .50 cal rifle that I have installed a rear makeshift peep sight on. I have tried white paint, and orange paint on the tip of the front sight to allow my old eyes to more quickly pick out my target, and under certain circumstances, both allow me on target, with both eyes open, very handily. My problem is #1 keeping the paint on the sight and #2 getting a universal colour that will work in any daylight situation. I am asking for any tried and true solutions , my fellow muzzleloader fans might have. Thanks for any suggestions here.

you could look at a replacement fiber optic front sight. Just knock out the old one with a brass punch, make sure the dovetails are the same size (some filing may be required) then tap in the new one

Wishalot: I've had the same problem in the past, too. Paint wears off, too easily. As Flintyboom suggests, you could go to a hi-viz sight. Barring that, a replacement brass, or German silver sight may also work for you. Track of the Wolf has several options to choose from.
Another option: Paint the front sight with either gold paint, or gold nail polish. This really makes the sight stand out under most lighting conditions, and especially in sunlight. I go with this approach, when a front sight may be difficult to remove, ie: staked in. or soldered on. Nail polish seems to stick on the best.
Hope this helps.

Al

ps: I always shoot with both eyes open, too.

Wishalot, On several of my rifles I use "Appliance Enamel" that I got at CT, about $7-8 last time I bought some. It comes in a Small bottle - 1-2-oz, but it usually dries up b4 I use it all. When just a dot or two is all I use it goes a long way, and I've found it Very Durable as long as you let it cure a few days. I've put some on the 'tip' of a front ramp, the front post and hood on an SKS and the Rear sight thereof, too. ON the tip of my Armalite AR-7 front ramp, too. And others, you get the idea. Here's the SKS, I put Yellow Hi-liter on the Rear Sight for faster sighting. The Front-post is out of focus but shows up in 'real life'. Currently I have Y-Hi-liter on it , too.

I have a pair or prescription glasses that I use for open sight pistols(bullseye). I held my handgun up against a wall with the same stance I use for shooting and had my wife measure from the wall(front sight) to the bridge of my nose. I then went to an optometrist and had my eyes tested and asked for a prescription that was 20/20 at 39”, I see the front sight crystal clear the target is a bit out of focus, it has improved my shooting noticeably. Targets at 25 and 50yds.

Clean the sight surfaces with acetone, let dry. Take white nail polish and paint the sight surface, let dry. Take the fluorescent orange nail polish and paint over the white nail polish. The white will hide the black and brighten the orange. If painted straight onto the black the black will dull the orange somewhat. Let dry for a day or two.

M C nailed it. That system has worked for me for years but you must put a white base so the Flour orange really jumps out against any background.

Really appreciated all the advice - have now got that front sight really visible. As mentioned, white first, then bright orange. Quick on target and easy sighting in. Looking forward to the next hunt. Thanks to all.

I rely on a fairly wide flat topped blade in front and a wide square notch with a flat top for the rear sight. Important for the rear notch to let enough light through that you can clearly see the front sight. On one gun I soldered a small piece of copper wire into a notch in the back of the front sight but the problem is that glare, even on a forested trail walk, throws my perception of the center of the sight to one side. Even in a forest, light coming from the side creates a bright spot on the side of the front sight and my shot would be to the side of the target
