front sights hood, why are they so rare on used guns?
is this because people loose them, are they are simply removed?
i personally had many used rifle that were suppose to have them, missing.
even on brand new one, like the ruger 10/22, the designer didn't think to put one on.

the sight hood or protective ramp, for rear sights, is suppose to guard the fragile and so important part against bump and accidents.
why are they missing?

Mostly removed in low light and lost... Some get knocked off walking through brush or crossing fences etc... I always track down original hoods for all my guns and usually have a spare or two in my gear box.

I took mine off because it got caught on the wool inside my hard atv case, it was a real pain to get it out every time.

Another enemy of sight hoods can be the gun boot on an atv.
Whenever I'm missing one off a Winchester I'm carrying that's the first place I look... and its there.
It may take physical effort to remove it, but a ride on a quad will pop it off.

Knew a guy that cut the hood off an old milsurp 'cause he found it obscured his field of view too much. He left the rest of the rifle in mil spec, though.

I have the same question of the RC K98s, why did the Russians scrap the hoods?

ITB

From what i have heard. Its due to the russians taking off whatever wasnt deemed necessary to the function of the rifle in their eyes. I believe this included for k98's:
the retaining or "capture" screws
Front sight hood
& the cleaning rod

If im not mistaken these parts were reduced to base metals and were all used to feed the communist beast's thirst for materials.

Far as the more modern rifles i would guess due to atv scabbards n the sort yanking them off and their habit to get caught on things.
