Recently finished this book by Mitchell Zuckoff. We've all heard about the "Lost Squadron" of B-17's and P-38's that set down on the Greenland Ice Cap and became entombed under 268' of snow and ice. One P-38 was recovered (Glacier Girl) and made the tour of airshows.
The book is about the attempts made to rescue the downed airmen from other crashes, notably the B-17 PN9E. The US Coast Guard cutter 'Northland' sent her Grumman "Duck" to do the job and after successfully bringing out the most seriously injured, crashed on the second attempt. Her crew and others were lost and never found.
The author, the Coast Guard and others successfully lobbied to fund the "Duck Hunt'', find her and bring her crew home. Using ground penetrating radar and other high tech gear, they succeeded in locating her. To know the rest, read the book.
