Hi Guys,

So.... it took me long enough but I finally got her out to the range. For those who didn't see my other pics, this is the set up I had.

I had to sight the Bushnell Trs-25 on the NEA rail so I started at 50 yards. I shot in three bunches on the targets below. I began aiming at the top left circle and was hitting directly below it. I then adjusted and POA and POI were the same. So, that means I was aiming and hitting the top left circle. Then, I just stood and did some free hand shots on the bottom right circle.

A pic of the bottom left circle (I was aiming for the circle above it).

A pic of the top left circle. Sight adjusted so I was aiming and hitting the right spot.

A pic of the free hand shots. (Not too good, but I haven't shot in a while and lost some muscle memory)

After that, we shot at the 200 yard gong for a while. I had to reduce the brightness on the sight to get it as small as possible and then adjust for windage etc. I wasn't too on point today but my friend was. He was hitting the gong repeatedly.

The muzzle flash on the rifle was no problem at all. I rarely noticed it. You would get a good fireball now and again though. Here is a video of the muzzle.

Overall, I didn't notice any loss of accuracy at such short distances. Next time I will take my 858 with the same setup (I have another TRS but I still need to buy another NEA rail) and see how they compare.

There were some downfalls to the day. The ak handguard I modded became extremely loose and I am sure it made the rifle less accurate. I made a thread about it and mentioned it had minimal play. That changed big time with shooting. The two pieces, bracket and hand guard were not attached in anyway. I am now thinking about how I can attach them together. I wonder what the strongest compound would be for beaver barf and wood. Epoxy or JB weld? Let me know if you guys have suggestions. Also, I did have a few failures to eject. I can't remember how many exactly.

The upside was really the NEA Rail and the Bushnell. The sight is excellent. I knew it was good before from stevo and other members reviews but I found out for myself today. I got excited and bought enough to furnish a few rifles.

Lastly, the set screw on the brake jarred itself loose after all the rounds we shot, I would say around 200 rounds or so. I took a pic because a member asked me for it before.

A brake that fit over the barrel would compliment this rifle a lot and make it seem even shorter. I don't know if anyone makes a krink brake in that format but it would be killer. On another note, the finish on these rifles is quite flimsy. The front sling attachment area wore away the finish. It is scratched up now but it looks like the bare metal is showing. The rifle is obviously just for blasting on the range but if this thing was taken through the bush for a few days it sure would show it. The blue paint on the 858's is ugly but it sure is durable compared to the bluing on these.

good review , nice grouping too . what kind of a FTF did you get ?

also is your buttstock missing buttplate ?

Hey Curtton,

Thanks for the encouragement. I had a few failures to eject. The round fed and fired but the bolt stayed closed, I just had to rack it to eject. The pic was when I freshly installed the stock and hadn't installed the butt plate. It is there now.
Hopefully, next week I will go out again and see if I have similar problems.

Did the bolt stay closed or just not run far enough to eject and then closed on the empty? Was it well lubed?

Maybe a crush washer or split washer would be better than the set screw. Is it threaded with the standard VZ muzzle thread>

I didn't see if it opened and closed on the casing or just stayed closed. A friend was shooting when it happened. I didn't add any lube to it aside from what it came with from the factory. What do you lube your rifle with and where? I have a heavy NEA brake that I will try to screw on for fit and let you know.

I use wheel-bearing grease year round. Lube all the contact points on the bolt carrier/bolt/receiver rails. It certainly won't hurt it to be generously lubricated, especially if it needs a break-in period. My 858s never had any issues when new, but the certainly ran smoother after breaking in.

It may have been short-stroking due to lack of lube or tight fitting new parts. Lube and/or shooting more should fix it if that's what's going on.

I had another range day with my FSN-01k this weekend. I must say I really love this rifle. It is so compact and handy. The best part is the NEA rail and the trs-25. I also tried the NEA heavy brake on my 858. It performed amazing as well. I had my folding stock on and I didn't get the cheekbone slap that I would without a brake.

Stevo you asked if it was standard cz thread on the barrel and I can confirm that it is. I put the nea brake on it.

I would like to keep it on the shorty and shoot with it next time but I am unsure how to index it. Stevo, you mentioned crush washer. Would I just keep trying different size washers until it indexed? Where would I get one?

Also, when I was cleaning the rifle I realized the carriers and the hammers are different. The FSN carrier and hammer is cut to accommodate the bar on the inside right of the receiver that make it semi. What this means is that you can use the FSN carrier and hammer in a cz but not vice versa. You would have to mod your cz bolt and hammer to use in an FSN rifle. This is for those that might want to get an aftermarket carrier. Check it out.

Lastly, I epoxied the ak handguard to my beaver barf bracket and it is solid as a rock in terms of attachment. It was so tight it wouldn't even fit back on. I had to shoot it without the pin in the handguard for about 75 rounds until everything loosened up and it would fit again. I forgot the pin and bracket at home so I was stuck holding it in place and shooting. Kind of put a damper on the shooting. I got home and put the bracket in and the pin so now I hope I am done with trial and error. It is a really comfortable grip. I hope it functions like it should.

thats incorrect.

those cuts are also in the CZH2003 (VZ58 S&L) . the carriers and strikers are still interchangeable , the cuts prevent the use of the full auto sear .

any FTF?

How did I miss this post!! Great review. I really like your hand guard. That is also some great shooting. You should be very happy with the overall setup.

Sorry Curton, you are incorrect...I can't get a "regular" bolt carrier or striker to work in my rifle.

The bolt carrier in my CZH 2003 is cut exactly like the OP's and there is a "bar" in the receiver. I recently bought a VZ Lightening bolt off the EE...

Guess what? It didn't fit my CZH 2003 due to the carrier and striker cut not being there.

So out came the calipers, a hack saw with a fresh blade, and my trusty vice.

It fits now.:D

i shouldnt have said the CZH cos i dont have one but .....

sorry clob, i just swapped the carriers, bolts & strikers from my 2 CZ to my 3 FSN and they all worked fine . the CZ non cut carriers cleared the bar on the right of receivers .

Hmmm.... Good to know about the swap. It was like 2am when I looked and I didn't try swapping. No failures at all.

Any ideas on how to get the brake to index? I tried filing but it was hardly removing anything.

Weird. There must be something a little different with the CZH rifles. Thanks for testing it and the info.

Those look like pretty decent groups!:)

Too bad they didn't go with left-hand threads on those guns like on the AK-47.

If anything they would have a tendency to tighten the brake on the muzzle then.

Yeah, thats what stevo said might be a better alternative to the set screw. Can I pick one up from Homeless Despot?

I don't know if you can get them there. The only place I've seen them in use is on the muzzles of AR's. They washer crushes down as you tighten it so you can align the muzzle device properly. A split washer does the same thing, it just doesn't look as nice.

I wonder if there is enough space at the end of the barrel to attach the old front post sight. If so then a hack here and a dremil there should be the ticket.
;)

In terms of spacing it might work but I don't think the contour of the barrel would work. I will take a closer look. NEIT seems to be selling crush washers for AR's. I will see if he has some for the vz.
