FTR barrel weight?

Just wondering what's the average barrel weight you guys put on your FTR rifles.
I think mine is currently around 8.5lbs, so fairly heavy. I'll probably profile/chamber a new one this weekend for this season coming, debating going a bit lighter.
I'm not entirely sold on a heavier/stiffer barrel being always better anymore, so I'm wondering what others might have found in their experiments between light and heavy barrels?

thanks

for FTR heavier and stiffer is always better but you need to keep the total weight of the gun under 18.18 lbs including the bipod. So you want the longest and heaviest barrel that will keep you under that weight.

Few FTR guys use nightforce scope because they are so heavy and the scope weight would need to come out of the barrel.

lupies and sightrons tend to be light and that allows a bit more allowance for the barrel.

I have a full bull no taper on my FTR on a savage action. 30.75" and I'm just under weight (50 or so grams) with my scope caps and turret caps off. about 7lbs on the barrel by my calculations. My new barrel on my other build is a heavy palma finished at 32". There is a barrel weight calculator online that could help you in your decision on components and barrel length.

With my Savage actions, Sightron scopes, homemade stock and MPOD, I am running Shilen #7HV or Krieger #17HV - same taper. Well, under weight.

Should have enough room to put on the new Sightron SV 10-60 which is a very heavy scope.

With the Pierce Titantium single shot FTR action, I am able to run a 17A which is what many F Open shooters run. About 10-12oz heavier 17A vs 17HV or thereabouts.

All barrels finish at 30"

As long as you don't put on a heavy stock and/or bipod, you can run very heavy contours which I feel is a good thing.

YMMV.

SND if you are putting it on your barnard I think a heavy palma should make weight assuming your stock and bipod are the same you had last year.
I use the same profiles as krieger and a heavy palma comes out to 6.5 lbs medium 5.5 and light palma 4.5 so exactly 1 pound difference between the contours.

If you are making weight with an 8 1/2 lbs barrel now I suggest going with a staight taper like a heavy varmint or heavy bull target that will take you close to the 8 lbs mark.

Edit" btw I find it easier to tune vertical with a stiffer barrel like a straight taper opposed to stepped profiles like palma and heavy sporter profiles .

Last year I was only about 50grams under the max weight and that was without sunshade or caps on the scope... my bipod is a little heavy though. Debating just buying a lighter one or making something new if I have time later.
I use a sightrong 8-32x56, with NF ultralite rings and 20moa rail+screws its right on 1002grams.
Doing a few mods on the stock now to get a new weight(really don't like the rear end of it)... also probably gonna KG gunkote.

Murphy makes Ti rings and bases and may use this on new project which Ron Hilchey will test:
Barnard P
Bartlein HP 1-10 throated long for Lapua 220 Scenar L, Lapua brass, VV powder.
McMillan Edge stock
Nightforce 2014 Competition scope

Recoil may be heavy but we'll see how it works!

Peter

I plan to try some 220L's in this one as well this barrel bore would be perfect for them. I still have to see if I can find a length I can throat it that can use both the 175's and 220's. I'll play with that tonight with some dummy rounds.
I think those 220's could do really well and I'm curious to see at what speed they can be pushed.

Jerry this little piece caught my interest :) more info.

Edit I see it on their website. Am I wrong to say a 1/4moa adjustment seems coarse for 1000yds/900m f-class.

Ideally, I would want 1/8 min clicks on the elevation. BUT lots of shooters currently use 1/4 min and do just fine. I have used 1/4 min for years and it worked.

For windage, 1/4 or 1/8 really doesn't matter as you are moving a bunch when you have to move windage.

The optics and new side focus are really impressive and certainly a step up over the SIII (which is already excellent). We are certainly in NF comp/March territory. I hope to do some side by side testing in the coming months.

The side focus system is truly unique and works really really well. It is the optics and focal system that is motivating me to live with the 1/4 elevation and get my rifles on a diet....1 rifle is already way underweight so I could be ok???

Waiting on 34mm rings and then I can take the scope out for a test drive. The mechanicals feel really positive and the quality of movement is top tier. I do not expect any tracking issues.

So far, out of box, very impressed.

Well, turns out I was off on my thought that it was 8.5 pounds, just took it off and weighed it, its just a bit over 7.5lbs. So I'll probably keep a fairly similar profile on the new one, maybe shave an extra 100grams or so.
Really debating a lighter bipod, this thing right now is at 792grams, a bit heavy and I can't lighten it much more and have it stay as solid.

I gulped real hard when I invested in the Pierce Titanium receiver. Would an extra 11ozs saved really make a difference?

YES, it does. Running the 17A contour offers advantages in tracking and consistency I really wasn't expecting. Tuning has been a no brainer too.

The change isn't a huge deal but its there so why not?

FYI, the MPOD is approx 13oz or 330grams. Frees up a whole bunch of weight which can be put to more productive use.

Overtime, my FTR rifles have shed weight everywhere I can so that it can be put into the barrel. The 7HV/17HV are a very nice compromise and what I use most of the time... the 17A, because of the Titanium action, gives me more of a good thing.

YMMV.

I use a Barnard S on this, with jewel trigger its at 1158grams, not too bad for such a nice solid action. The stock with grips/pad and screws is at 1895gram (4.1lbs)now, might try to make it an even 4lbs before paint. Running out of places to trim on that too. I also want to put a barrel mirage shield on it this year and use the fore end as it was meant to be...

It's a bipod a made as a proto last year, the idea worked and its fairly solid, but I probably wouldn't make another one like that.
