I had a chance to fire some fully automatic weapons this week.
First off was the selective fire Galil rifle in 5.56mm with a full 35 round magazine. I was surprised at how long the trigger pull was. After a couple of rounds semi-auto, the soldiers were urging me to go full auto. It was a blast, very easy to control and I was easily able to squeeze off 2-3 round bursts and keep my sight picture on the target.
I found the aperture sights small for a combat rifle and had trouble firing with both eyes open. I had to close my left eye to acquire the peep.
All in all a very fun and enjoyable rifle to shoot.
Next up was the highlight of the afternoon. A Vektor SS-77 GPMG in 7.62 NATO. It's a belt fed MG that fires from an open bolt. The instructors ran us through it and then we each had a belt to let loose on the target 200m away. They had red tracers every 10th round.
I was able to fire 2-4 (I think?) round bursts with the Vektor and did not come off the target very much. After two belts they swapped barrels and let us burn off a couple more belts.
None of us could get those shi*-eating grins off our faces for at least an hour afterwards
