No joking, I'm 16 years old and a Westie on Infantryman R031 PLC or TQ3 Crse with 2 CDO Instrs. Since it's 1975 in Vernon, the Cdn Abn Regt lost 3 killed and 29 wounded during the '74 Turkish invasion of the Island (Cyprus)

This pic is us horsing around out side the BCD (BC Dragoons) doing our wpns drills and taking a break.

Here is yours truly horsing around with the GPig (GPMG C1 or Browning 1919A4 in 7.62mm)

You can see the 2 paratrooper instrs in the background. For you young CGNutters, these guys were some of the toughest bzstards in the world and they edumacated me way beyond my years. Their lessons they taught me shaped the person I am today.

Hey, it's all good!

Cheers,

Barney

Nice pics! Sounds like interesting times.

Do I spy one of those heavy barrel support FN's in the first pic?

And what is this thread doing in Milsurps? This stuff aint that old! :runaway: this should be in the battle rifle section!

Memories Hungry!
When I was posted to the CAR, 2 CDO in 1986, there were still about a dozen serving paratroopers that had been in Cyprus with the Regiment in 1974.
The CSM of Ab Hq & Sigs was bayonetted in the stomach & in return shot the Turkish soldier for his efforts. At that time he was a MCpl.
Another W.O. was a Cpl then, was on a gun jeep and when the officer he was driving and himself came under hostile fire, he was ordered to stop & return fire with a burst. Well he burned up the whole belt of 50 BMG, but the hostile fire near the airport, ceased ranging on them. IIRC two young paras from 1 CDO rolled a jeep fatally, and the one officer was shot trying to record by audiotape, the firefight between hostile forces, just outside of the Ledra Hotel, near downtown Nicosia. (It's rumoured a British national, working as a merc' for the Greek/Cypriot forces, shot the officer dead) Many others were wounded by gunfire/artillery shrapnel. Prisoners from both sides, owe thier lives to Canadians paratroopers interveening when an execution of unarmed captured soldiers or civlians seemed about to happen. And without British armoured cars & other heavy weapons/aircraft, our troops would have been toast!

Great photos from times past indeed!
Edit: If anyone doubts my prior military service, they can PM me, and I'll privately quote my Regimental Coin #.

First night of the Gulf War, one of my Sgts came into the bunker and said, 'Well boys, it doesn't happen very often, but we're at war!' He'd been a clerk with the Airborne during the invasion. You wouldn't know it to look at him.

I was about 10 back then and had an Uncle that was a Master Cpl. in Cyprus. His name was Jim RUSSEL (tough reddish haired, a bit freckled Airborne ass kicker) in case any of you knew the name. And Brutus, why would someone question your service? If you say you served it's good enough for me. Who would lie about that. Thanks for your service.

You young whippersnappers had it soft Barney. You actually got issued combat clothing for basic training.:p When I went thru the Armoured Corps School 10 yrs earlier it was black coveralls, ankle boots, puttees, and 1951 pattern web all the way. Bush pants and shirts got saved for the classroom, parade square and other non-field parts of the training. We seemed to take a perverse pride in having the crappiest field uniforms in NATO back then.

Can't say I know the fella, but as a newbie to the Regiment then, there was alot of tough paratroopers that I never got to meet personally.
The Regiment was very competative and secular. For the most part the infantry commandos (companies) never mixed much on our time off.

But hey, that was my time, presently our brave soldiers are involved in a real shooting war.

Cheers................;)

Got to say I just love hearing this old trip's down memory lane Hungry. Also I never seen a bigger smile on a kid @ the range. Although these picture's look like they were taken when I was even born. Damm it must have been fun to live in a free country back then.

It's yours to take back. Think big young man, think big.

You know somewhere there's a Liberal having a heart palp at the thought of a teenager with an MG. The reality is that without teenagers with MG's we wouldn't be speaking English (or French), and that Liberal wouldn't be Liberal. As far as the Airborne goes, I only met a couple of guys from the Airborne, the word hardcore only begins to describe them (the word insane is a good one too).

There was alot of things that went on in the Airborne that I never became privy to until years later. One good one, was that the Regiment quietly selected thier best for an anti-terrorist exercise at the Dwyer Hill facility. These selected paratroopers were to be the enemy force in a mock exercise against the RCMP/National CERT team out of Ottawa then. (nothing personal officers)
Well the 'terrorists' held the airplane and passengers hostage. The RCMP assault team could not seize it back using thier present training doctrine. It's surmised that thier rules of engagement then, did not mesh well, with terrorists on the international stage bent on mass murder.

Yes, I've heard similar rumours of selected paratroopers being used for strategic purposes. The drill was to send the whole unit on exercise so a couple dozen guys would not be recognized as 'missing'.

JTF - Join Through Friends
also described as a reunion of One, Two and Three Commandos
