I'm getting on and have some FA I wish to sell or donate to the War museum. One is a very nice MP-18-1 Bergmann. Unfortunatelly I sold the snail drum years ago,but it still takes a Luger pistol mag. Can't shoot them anymore as we always went to CFB Borden. Now are there 12(2) members interested or shall I donate (for a tax credit) to the War museum in Ottawa?? How/who do I contact at Ottawa??
I think I paid about 600$ for it some years ago with a Carl Gustaf M36 trade and a Sterling L2A3 . Have no clues about pricing these days. I got these from a best friend, Finn Nielsen ,who recently died.

Any advice ?? thanks Jim:(

thats too bad he was a good guy last I saw him he was not looking too good

as for value of your guns hate to even suggest it but they are worth alot more if you dewatt them which i bet the museum would do anyways.......
 
The war museum will just stick it in a box somewhere in their archives. It won't get displayed. Unfortunately.
There are a number of smaller regimental museums that might be interested.

Otherwise, why not sell it to someone else in the 12.2 class?

I think I am jaded though in regards to the war museum in Ottawa. I was just there a couple weeks ago and I was quite underwhelmed to say the least.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but really? Why so underwhelmed, poor displays, or not much to see?

I was there too. I didn't have enough time to see everything because my companion figured half a day was enough. I never saw the display that was shown here with the Ross' and Huots. Also, I seem to remember the old war museum downtown used to have Bren Gun Carriers and other stuff I didn't see at the new one. I think the museum is definitely slanted toward the "general public" viewer, not those who have some familiarity with and interest in military hardware. It is too easy to get from one gallary into another without realizing you aren't to the end. That happened to us and I asked a volunteer to take me to the exhibit of Ross rifles, which I had missed. There were a Mk I, II III and III sniper. Maybe there is a back area where there is all kinds of hardware that is not on display that you need a special pass to get to.

A number of reasons and none of them really strong. As mentioned by wacker, my feeling was it was trying to draw in an 'artsy' crowd and not meant for a technical crowd (don't know if I'm making sense).

There was a LOT of space that could have been filled with 'stuff'. They missed out of the variants of different things, ie. kit, firearms, unique one of a kinds, clothing, etc etc.

The armour area was extremely crowded without much literature. In the armour area back wall they had a small glass display with 4 VCs in it. It was like these VCs were just tucked in and put in this area, cause they had to, sort of thing. Not any where near the predominance they should have gotten.

I think they could have done a lot more without much trouble had they gotten some input from people who want to use the facility as sort of a 'resource'.

I could go on a bit more, but again, it's obvious this museum isn't for the military enthusiast. I go to museums to see 'stuff' and learn some history and improve my knowledge base. It didn't really do it for me.

Just my opinion.

I haven't been into the War Museum but I have been into the storage armoury for the museum. The MG's lie stacked up on top of each other and the staff is unhappy that they don't get to display a tenth of the things they have. A big push for a while was dewatting a big chunk of the collection so it could been taken on the road, to re-enactments etc, without security worries- something they call the "living history" collection.

I would find some other course of action for your pieces. If they aren't displaying the M1886 Gatling used at the Riel Rebellion, or the FN C1 serial Number 0L0001, or the FG42's, they aren't going to display your Bergmann.
 
That's sad to hear. You'd think a museum such as the War museum in Ottawa would be better run. I guess technical specs and being proud of our war veterans is a no no.

Those bastards in power only pay lip service to Canada's proud military history & the vets that forged it. I think for a country with a small professional army & limited financial means, Canada has always gone above & beyond the call. Too bad most of the population doesn't know anything about it. Why is the federal government not buying all the VC from the families of vets? No mater what the cost to buy them (& display them in an appropriate reverent setting), I can guarantee the vet payed a much higher price to get it to begin with. But I guess the sacrifice & bravery of those that bought our (now limited) freedom don't matter anymore.
