Funny thing isn't it how so many theads pop up about caliber choices and gun choices? What's right, what isn't? .270 vs 30-06, .260 vs .243, 375 H&H vs .375 Ruger, this vs that. It brought to my mind an old fellow that I met about a year ago. I met him though a paper add. He had decoys and blinds for sale. So, I answered the add and visited him. Never was I so humbled as to the day that I visted his house. This is a home of substantial square footage, shall we say. We the entire upstairs devoted to a trophy room. But it wasn't the absolutely beliwindering trophy line up to brought me to my knees, it was his life long stories that brougt tears to my eyes. This fellow had actually hunted with the Shaw of Iran (I hope to have spelled that right), it's wasn't just palin internet Bs, he has pictures of them beside the trophy mounts. Not only did this old dude accomplish the Grand Slam, but he accomplished and was recognized for the world "Super Slam". Besides being a world sheep hunter (as was his wish), he trophied major North American and African Species, including cape buffalo and "elephant"/ Why do I tell you guys this?...only because the most amazing part of it all is when I asked him "what rifles did you use on all of these hunts". He shyly replied..."this one". A custon built 7mm-mag, that was built on a pre-64 win70, he had no idead what it was, didn't give a ####....he hjust went hunting, by his words. Thaugts for all. :) PS, I have so many pictures of his trophy room, includes full size mounts that you won't believe your eyes.

beautiful story. He probably wounded a ####load of game because he didnt load his rifle with Barnes TSX, and his wood stock would warp so much that his point of impact would shift two feet at 100 yards. Did you tell him that he should rechamber it to 7mm Wby Mag for the extra energy at 500 yards?

:D

I guided a fella who had a "personal worth" of over $450 Million. He too, had been nearly everywhere.

I asked to see his rifle and he handed me his "Remington" as he called it.

It was a Winchester 70 in 7mm Remington Magnum.

I told him it was a Winchester, not a Remington. He said, "are you sure?"..........

Did it matter what he had? No. Cause he had a tag and a rifle and desire to hunt. The rest really didn't matter to him.

gitrdun, I'm happy you had the opportunity to experience that.

Yeah the article was in one of the outdoors magazines last year. It was either Field&Stream or Outdoor Life. He used a 7mm Mag but he also borrowed a 460 Weatherby for the big stuff.

There has always been a few types- Hunters, Shooters, shooters that Hunt, Hunters that shoot...

It is far more common these days to have a collection of rifles than it used to be. My dad's only hunting rifle was a 30-06 Remington autoloader- He is left handed and they didn't make lefty bolt actions back then...

Discsussions about cartridge choice are an age old topic, although they probably made more sense back inthe day of regular bullets and limited rifle choice. So these discussions will never end, and they do provide entertainment around campfires (real and virtual) forever.

I recall agonizing about which cartridge to pick- .270, 30-06, 7RM- and whetehr to buy a Remington, Winchester, Ruger...then when I had used them all on game realizing that they all killed about the same....

But part of the fun is the agonizing over the "perfect" cartridge and the "perfect" rifle, and trying to find that "perfection"...and most gun nutz wouldn't have it any other way!:)

Speaking of "agonizing" - I just agonized reading my opening post. I have to apologize for all the typos and spelling mistakes, but I brought back a nasty bug from my recent trip up north and I'm taking so pretty good "over the counter prescription" drugs....:dancingbanana:

Anyways, for your enjoyment here are just but a few pics.

I have met that old-timer before, soft spoken, but with a real strength in his voice still. I can't remeber where it was at, but I would like to say from the days I spent slinging guns in Calgary. Old fellas like that need to have their stories written and treasured. That is a very nice Urial Ram.

and i bet there are a ton of old wise men out there with equally impressive rooms/pictures/memories and all done with the 6.5mm swede, 7mm mauser & 30-06. but having said that, what fun would it be without all these exciting cartridges. although the 308 vs 30-06 vs 270 one's are getting tiring. l like the questions like is a .223 "enough" for a moose type questions.

Good call on the Urial Ram there Rem338Win, he obviously took that in Afghanistan. You should see the picture of the "characters" that guided him on that hunt...they're probably Taliban now. My favourite is that big Argali Ram. The horns weight over 200lbs. This bad boy actually has to knee down in order to graze so that he doesn't tip over from the weight of his head gear. That Marco Polo ram comes in at a close 2nd for me.

Here are a few more pics:
