Funny trap guns

Popped by the local trap range yesterday to watch some shooting.

I have gone sporting clays one time only and want to try trap and skeet, so I thought watching a few rounds would give me an idea of what it is like.

The five people I watched used:

1. An over under

2. A pump

3. A single shot

4. Another double

5. A pump with a scope and what looked like a weight under the muzzle

Is this unusual?

I've never neard of trap with a scope sighted shotgun, but there you go, he was hitting pretty good too.

The person with the single seemed to have a hard time breaking it open, shutting it and cocking the hammer. A couple times she called pull and had forgotten to #### it. She did hit clays occasionally though.

Looked like regular folks out for a fun afternoon shooting. Only two of them had any of the "shooting gear " you expect, like the vests shell bags, etc.

some guns when you open it to put in a shell will automatically engage the safety, and sometimes people not used to it will forget to disengage it before shooting...

a lot of guys instead of buying fancy shell pouches just go to Cdn Tire and get a tool puch for $5, works really well... i want to get a few as loaners for the club

You see all kinds of guns, gear, and people at the club. In any one squad you could see Perazzi, Mossberg, Beretta, Savage, and Winchester. If it throws pellets, somebody has used it for trap or skeet. That's what it's all about, people out shooting and enjoying themselves.

Never, ever feel ashamed to bring whatever gun you have to a club. People may comment that there are better choices for each game, but they should never make fun of or belittle a guy for the gun he holds. Point out their rude behaviour if it happens. Likewise, don't make fun of the guy with the Perazzi who isn't shooting as well as you and your 870! Unless he's your buddy, of course, then it's open season.

Clays are fun with any gun.


About 20 years ago I saw a guy shoot doubles with a bolt action stevens 12ga. He was doing alright, and it got him by until he could afford a nicer more suitable trap gun. (I got the stevens passed down to me...... )

Gotta tell ya though I have never seen anyone try a scope before, but what ever floats your boat.

Most of the fellas I shoot with use some sort of trap style gun but kinds....there are Browning, Beretta, Mossberg, Perazzi, Kriegoff, Remington and Winchesters. There are a lot of high end gun users at my club but the most popular is probably a BT99.

You'll see all kinds of guns on the line at our club although optical sights are very rare. I'm under the impression (and may well be mistaken) that ATA rules are that only shooters with a visual impairment are allowed to use optical sights.

A few years ago I mounted a Bushnell Holosite on a Beretta 390 and gave it a try at clays just to see what it was like. It was different. It made trap and skeet seem like a video game. I liked it on skeet more than on trap.

I have seen it all at the trap field. Coach guns, red dot sights, "tactical" shotguns with cylinder bore chokes, you name it....but at the end of the day it is all about getting out and having fun.

I cant wait for the weather to go above zero so I can get out and shoot!

I shoot in 2 trap leagues and 1 skeet league which are run only during the winter as well as some sporting clays

The leagues shoot regardless the weather

We have a guy that shoots a Baikal O/U from the hip... he'll get up to 17/25 that way.

Yes you will see everything at the club, I ahve a buddy who has shot a SXS blackpowder ... the were less mosquitoes that day for some reason.

The preffered guns of course are the Semi Auto and the O/U and sometimes a single for Trap.

Baikal actually makes a single shot trap gun for around $200-$300
Raised comb, ported bbl, vent rib etc.... I was going to buy one just for ####s and giggles, I may yet get one.

When its snowing so hard that you cant see the bird after it crosses the center stake then its time to call it a shoot.

Last winter I was so freaking cold, I could not feel the weight my finger was applying to the trigger and I shot the top of the bird house as I said PULL!

Ha ha that was the end of my winter trap shooting experience!

I shoot at Toronto International Trap and Skeet. I know they are open but man the wind makes it cold!

Galt Sportsmen Club. In the bush it's usually not too bad although last Sunday it seemed the wind was coming into your face no matter which direction you were shooting. Skeet and trap however are shot in open fields and it can get cold. Layered clothing, a good hat and proper gloves make it tolerable.

The only time weather ever keeps me back is an electrical storm. It's not all that much fun standing in an open field with a 32" Italian lightning rod in your hand.

I shot trap last weekend in -14 C. It was cold but I shot well so it didn't matter.

winter shooting is not that bad, if you're dressed properly. Sometimes if it's cold enough, the targets will slow down, and you may hit more

Only 3 guys on my squad Claybuster and all fast shooters so we did 50 targets in about 20 min so I never felt the cold but I saw some squads out there for nearly an hour and those guys and gals looked frozen when they came inside.

I believe I shot that as well. I think it was HAHA with those wide open fields. Brutal day.

The trap wasn't bad last Sunday. It was the 100 sporting I shot before the trap that convinced me not to shoot a second 100 in the afternoon.

Back to the variety of guns for a second.

I bought my daughter one of those NEF Pardner 20ga singles. My daughter was 9 at the time - she's 12 now. I chose 20 ga for cheap shells and reduced recoil. I chose a single shot, so I wouldn't have to worry about her turning around to celebrate a hit with a round still in the chamber (I know you only load one in the first place, but with beginners you can't be too careful).

My buddy and I watched her shoot a few boxes through it and eventually got curious as to whether it shoots where you point it. So, we took turns putting 5 rounds through it. First time we touch the gun, fit is all wrong - we both hit 4 out of 5. I can admit I was surprised. I expected, with everything that was against us, we'd do worse than that.

If you read another of my posts, you may know that, for an added challenge, we like to try to take at least one bird with as many different guns as possible in a given season. Last year, later in the season, I was running out of guns that hadn't bagged a bird yet. So, I headed out with a 16 ga single Cooey, my 11/87 premier trap, and the NEF Pardner 20. Would you be surprised if I told you that day was one of the most enjoyable of the season? The Pardner was refreshingly light and the shells were lighter, too. I got my bird despite everything being wrong with the fit (much the same as what we saw at the range).

If anyone knows of a 20 ga SXS that weighs less than 6 lbs - I'd like to hear about it. In the meantime, I'll take that lil' Pardner out once a year and make no apologies to anyone. I agree with the general consensus - don't knock another shooter's gun, no matter how ridiculous it may seem at first. And, don't stay home just because you're not shooting a Perazzi.

I just bought a Baikal Trap gun today... it will be here in a couple of weeks... I should have bought it last year, they have gone up $65 at the wholesale level.
