Furnace to install in my hunting rig?

You can usually find old camper furnaces at the wrecker.

I'd suggest one of the old convection types without the fan. The fans are a battery hog.

The old convection ones can be set on low and go forever, keeps everything nice and dry.

I've used the Buddy Heater in a tent… It worked well but I don't think I'd feel safe sleeping with it on without a CO detector.

I have a buddy heater. Works well. They have. Low oxygen shut off built in. I also have a 15k btu sunflower type.
I use them in my 7x14 ice hut. Dose your tailer have a vent?

Use an Atwood 8012 front discharge lp furnace. Yes u need to cut small hole for vent but u can sleep easy knowing its safe. I sell them and can ship anywhere in Canada. Send me a pm if you wish. Cheers

Buddy of mine and I sleep in a 12X16 insulated cabin at our hunting camp. We have used a "Big Buddy" for years, and it never failed.

We travel there in late September-early October, and the thing is on pilot most of the time, and place stays warm. In November, mostly on low, with the fan on (we have a 110 V converter for it, so no batteries). It was -30 for a few days there last year and no problems.

It does have a shut off feature, but we still have a window cracked open a bit for safety, as I, along with many others I'm sure, am paranoid with propane.

All you would need for your application would be the regular "Buddy". Cheap and reliable!

The thing with a propane heater is the moisture it makes when it burns. Have had it dripping off the roof before. Best is wood if you have the room or if you can vented propane.

X2

Personally I prefer the old Coleman diesel heaters 10-1 over anything propane, I've seen them go thru an auction for a few bucks a piece because either nobody knew what they were or nobody wanted one...

No matter what type of propane burning appliance you choose, basic principals apply. 1. It needs a fresh source of combustion air ( open window, or dedicated duct). 2. Burning propane produces products of combustion ( un burnt gases ) so the appliance should be vented to the outside somehow ( dedicated chimney). No matter what the manufacturers of Little Buddy, Big Buddy or who ever tells you these basic principals apply.

Example, turn on your propane stove, or some other open flame propane appliance, close up your windows and doors and go to bed, and there's a good chance you won't be waking up, ever..!! Carbon monoxide is one of the products of combustion, one of the un burnt gases. Yes I know a lot of fellas use these "Buddy" heaters and like them, but I would not ever trust my life to one period.

My camper is heated with a propane furnace which is of the old gravity type ( no fan ) and vented to through to the outside through the wall of the camper. We keep a window open a bit near the furnace and one of the roof vents open and bit. Plus we have a detector just to be on the safe side. I clean the furnace a couple times per year. Blow it good with the compressed air hose and vacuum what I can see and reach. This little furnace has worked like a charm with no issues for well over 30 yrs. and because it has no fan it uses no battery power.

I installed an atwood 18k BTU tent trailer furnace with outside vent (propane) without issues in my enclosed cargo trailer for ice fishing. It works great. I got it used, and the fan bearing makes a bit of noise on cold cold starts (like -25C), but it works fantastic. I insulated the trailer with 1" foam on the roof and walls. I'll do the floor this spring. It was super easy to wire it up and install it. And because it uses outside air for combustion and directly vents outside its completely safe. I cant wait to camp in it this spring and summer, right into the fall!

I also have a big buddy heater that I bring along for emergency use but I dont trust it and it creates too much moisture. Its more to get things immediately up to temp when I first park the trailer or in the mornings (I turn the furnace down quite a bit at night).

Revived this thread... Anyone have first hand experience with the above heater? I'm considering one to put into my little Boler trailer. I *think* it will fit....

Other safe alternatives? The original is on its last legs.

I have seen this set up and I think I might try it .

it consists of a larger rad ( in this case a 2002 dodge diesel with a couple puncture wound epoxied shut ) this replaces the heater inside . a 12v fan / blower pushes air through it .

the burner that is outside is 3 ,15 inch rims with most of the center cut out and ( you want some of the center left in place to act as a baffle ) the rim faces welded together .

it sits on the ground stacked 3 high .

copper tubing is wrapped around the outside of the rims tightly ( use at least 1 /2 or 3/4 tubing 3/4 is better ) .

a five gallon container ( ie jerry can ) is used as a reservoir ( ( if everything is clean , the reservoir can be a source of hot water .... also many reservoirs can be used .

from the reservoir , 2 , 3/4 or 1" bilge pumps are used in series to push water through the heating coils and into the rad , the water from the rad goes into the reservoir .

the bilge pumps are control with a thermostat located in the trailer .

get a fire going on top of the rims and let the ashes and charcoal fall to the bottom .

once a decent fire is going start feeding the large chunks of birch ( or similar ) .

if done right inside the rims should be fairly airtight and the coals should burn most of the night .

if a guy used a large 300 - 400 gallon reservoir , there would be all sorts of hot water to washing / showering and holding more than enough heat long after the fire went out

Mine is either this model or one very similar. It works great. I used it ice fishing this year in -25c (not factoring in wind chill), and it did great. I bought a CO monitor just in case, but its safe. The combustion gases are completely separate from the hot air. Think of a radiator principle. The combustion occurs in a sealed "chamber" and air is circulated around that "chamber" which is really like a radiator, and it heats it up and the combustion gases are vented directly outside. No mixing. It works great. The fan can be a little noisy, but I got mine used (free) too so factor that in.
