Not sure if I should've posted this in OT, but it related to precision rifles so: I was just watching this show, and the guy was talking about (more like endorsing) the Barrett M107. At one point a major talks about how the Canadians took out the guy at 2430m, and while this isn't a flat out lie, it's misinformation; it gives you the impression that this was done by the Barrett .50, and not the McMillan Tac-50. Any thoughts?

I saw that show and my impression was he was talking of the .50 BMG round not the Barret M-107 rifle when talking about the Canadian shot. If your talking about the part where the Marine officer was showing the effective ranges of the .50 by having a man drive the range out in a Hummer.

Oh ok. Well when I watched it, even when they were demonstrating what the .50 BMG round does, I thought it sounded like they were trying to say that the M107 has more range or is more "powerful" than most .50's.

-Rohann

My impression - they made it sound like Ron Barrett more-or-less invented the 50.
IMO the guy doing that show pumps in too many dramatic comments and too little factual information.

Saw another show a few days before that one. GPS guided artillery shells.

22 miles, 90secs time of flight, 7yds from dead center of target. Do the MOA on that one.

Aimed 4 MILES off course, 5yds from dead center of target. Now that is serious precision shooting.

Now how do you cram that gear into a 6.5 cal bullet?

Dmay: Definately. That guy didn't peg me as being an Ex-Navy SEAL at all, he pegged me as the kind of ignorant Documentary host that endorses a specific product.
Jerry: Seriously? That's ridiculous!

What REALLY got me pissed off is that he apparently spent "10 years as a Navy S.E.A.L." (as mentioned at the beginning of the program when he's looking all hardass on the way to a test range), and when he's doing a comparison of rifle rounds he does the following:

"This is a .223 - standard issue for most assault rifles. This is a .308 - [naturally, I expect him to say standard issue for many bolt-action sniper rifles, but wait... wait for it...] standard round for the AK-47."

I swore at my TV - honest to God, gave it the old "#### OFF!" - in absolute disbelief.

What a tool.

I know! Maybe he was an armchair SEAL...You know, one of those guys who watches all the SEAL documentaries and decides that he's cool enough to claim himself as one.

Rohann, apparently, our forces in Afghanistan will be armed with similar GPS shells for the new M77 Howitzers. Range will likely be less but accuracy was reported to be similar.

finally, our forces have some of the good stuff.

No kidding! Also, did you hear about those new tanks (I think they were tanks, maybe they were APC's) in A-Stan that the Canadians got recently? A car bomber drove up to them and detonated the bomb, and none of the troops were hurt. The vehicle even drove to the base before the guys unloaded.

For a lot of it, of course - for the drama factor.

But saying the .308 is the standard round for the AK-47?! Jesus, he'd HAVE to catch that in mid-sentence!

Saying "this .308 fires a .30 calibre bullet, similar to the AK-47" would have been technically correct - saying the .308 IS an AK-47 round is ASININE!

I think Savage may have something, and I'm sure they checked his credentials before filming. Technicaly the 7.62X39 is a .308 round (short) which is what he was holding, and a cartridge for the AK-47, SKS, CZ and others, compared to the 7.62X51 Nato which we are used to. I'm sure the info was "Hollywood scripted". But lets all remember it was a show for non gun savey TV junkies.

Just an opinion.
