FW: Semin Mosin

I have one of those and find it quite poorly balanced and muzzle-heavy. I should weigh it for comparison with a 91/30 and the standard socket bayonet. As many will recall, the batch that showed up in Canada seemed to generally have been lightly refurbished, with many original factory parts but some replacements and refinishing. Mine, for example, has the number-matching, original Izhevsk bolt, but an apparently renumbered, replacement floorplate.

given how rare these are, I was always surprised how difficult it is to sell one once you have it. That said, if you are looing for one, you'll pay top dollar. A real head scratcher.

We were lucky to get these in Canada, either way.

The problem is you need a serious collector to appreciate and want one. I used to have a fairly serious Soviet Mosin Nagant collection (rarest two I owned being a 1926 M91 Infantry Rifle and a M91 Dragoon) and even then these didn't interest me that much because it wasn't a main model adopted (I was only seeking the main issued arms, not prototypes).

Otherwise for all intents and purposes it is just a M91/30, only with a folding bayonet on the end. For anyone looking for a shooter, or even collecting WWII main arms, etc. It is just too much money for something you can easily have represented by a M91/30.

You are right we were lucky to get them in country though. Even though it isn't exactly my cup of tea, I am happy the more serious Soviet/Mosin collectors had the opportunity to get one.

They were well-promoted and went very quickly even though priced pretty high for the time. Recent auction sales of a couple have shown that they weren't a good investment and that Mosin collecting is still not big deal in Canada. Not very long before these arrived I recall buying excellent original, matching 91/30s for $400-$450 on the Exchange here. The only Mosins I've ever paid really significant dollars for were a couple of factory original and matching PUs that a knowledgeable collector had made a serious effort to find. If I was to try to auction them I'd likely stand a chance of getting less than half my money back. On the other hand, I auctioned off a refurbished (and inaccurate) M39 and got great money for it. Doesn't make as lot of sense.
