G17 vs G22

I am about to purchase my first handgun and need some clarification. I have read that you can swap the barrel out of the G22 and put in an aftermarket 9mm or 357sig barrel. Is this the case? Also, what mags would you need to buy if you had a G22 with the 9mm barrel?

Can the same be done for the G17? Can you put a 40cal barrel in a G17?

I am leaning toward the G22 with the .22lr kit and an after market 9mm barrel. The versatility to shoot 3 different rounds make sense to me. Thoughts?
 
Personally I would stick with the G17 and the conversion kit. 9mm is far cheaper to shoot than 40. If you wish to shoot major for IPSC than 40 is your only choice.

Price-wise it may not make sense, the Glock 22LR kit is as expensive as a standalone .22 handgun.
 
Try another choice

Skip the G17 and the G22 and seriously consider the longslide versions: G34 & G35. A little more money of course but the extra length, features, and factory trigger work make it worth it.
The nice people at Lone Wolf distributing make a conversion barrel for the G22 to fire 9mm. G17 to 22 is not advisable.
If you are a lead bullet user, then for a very reasonable hundred bucks, the Lone Wolf people will sell you a longslide barrel for the G34 & G35 so you can fire lead.
Don't get me wrong about the G17&G22, both damn good guns, but the G34 & the G35 have so much more to offer that they are worth it. Hell, even the G17L is a good choice.....

The upside to conversions kits is their ability to provide near identical feel for training at a much reduced cost. Most .22 pistols have no resemblance to any of the popular centre fire handguns.

Extra length?? Are you referring to the barrel length? If that's the case, the extra inch of barrel and sight radius amounts to near zero performance gains when we're talking about a range of 25 yards.

By features do you mean the extended slide lock and extended mag release? If so, I feel they're a worthless addition. However, they can be had after market and installed on any Glock by the user. Same story for the reduced strength trigger bar. Not necessary, but it too can be had after market. I don't see any reason to spend the extra coin for a G34 or G35.

For about $25 I was able to purchase the extended mag release and extended slide stop from MD Charleton for my G22.

Update.....

Ok, I went out and bought a brand new G17 at Target Sports. Good guys and a smooth transaction so far. Looks like a 2 week wait to get it according to the sales staff.

So far I have inquired at 3 stores and no one has the 22lr conversion kit in stock. Anyone know where I can get one of these kits?
 
If you are just getting into IPSC, the G35 and G34 will automaticaly put you into Standard division. Just a heads up. Personally, I own a G22 and G27 and shoot the G22 in production. I like the 40 just cuz its a little bigger but dont see a real difference between the 17. Also, in production theres no difference in Power factor (just minor) so a 17 would be an advantage if you shoot in that division....unless u can rock a 40 like me! :D:D:D

good choice on the glock though..cant go wrong!
