G21 Slide locks before mag is empty

I was shooting some 230gr reloads in my Glock 21 and the slide locked back a couple of times before the magazine was empty. This happened twice in about 300 rounds. I didn't keep track of which magazines were in use when the problem occured.

Recoil spring is well broken in, I'd replace just for S&G if I could find someone locally who carries them, but I doubt this has anything to do with it.

The slide locks back on an empty mag every time and there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the slide release lever.

I'll detail strip it tonight and give it a good cleaning, but this is a range queen and I don't expect failures from a Glock that's treated as well as this one. Glocks are supposed to work when full of sand, mud, and set concrete and this one gets cleaned after virtually every range trip. :D

Any advice on what to look for or try replacing, or any other suggestions?

Thanks.

Make a conscience effort to keep your thumb off of the slide lock . I sometimes inadvertently ride it up with my thumb without realizing it.

Try this first.

+1

I can confirm having done it myself many times. :p
Got so bad that now my slide sometimes won't lock open on the last round (you guess it, cause I am now holding the slide release down) ;)

I used to grip it such that my thumb rode the slide lever and it would often fail to lock back on an empty mag, so I changed my grip and my right thumb is now far left and nowhere near the controls. I can't see what part of my hands would touch the slide lever now.

I guess I'll just pay more attention on my next range trip, maybe my grip is shifting when I'm halfway through a mag. Thanks for the suggestions. I'm sure the solution will induce a good forehead smacking.

Same thing happens to me with my Tokarev
It could be something different with the TOK. I had the same problem with my TT33 with the slide stop engaging inadvertantly in the middle of a string. Turned out to be the retaining clip for the slide stop pin. When examined, the slide stop pin has a flat area ground on the surface. A properly fitting circlip, when put on correctly, will cause a slight down pressure keeping the lever out of the slide stop hole. Sort of off the topic, but I thought I'd pass it on. ps fixed w/new Marstar TT parts(circlip and lever)
