Gaillard Barrels

I have a Gaillard on my m700 260 Rem, but havent had a chance to really shot it alot yet. Hopefully this spring I will be able to stretch its legs a bit 500+ Y.

so far it is shooting sub MOA with most handloads. in a rifle that is unbedded with a 9x scope.

I am not sure how many people use Ted's barrels for long range or Benchrest but I can say that this years Western Cdn BR champ used one. He smithed the gun himself as well. I have heard that Ted used to do a lot of work or still does for the Olympic team. Could someone clarify if this is correct for me.

I have one in 6MM BR and love it. May have to order a few more in the next month or so. My barrel I would say is 95+ percent copper foul free. I would sure like to send a scope down it to see what it really looks like inside.

Terry, I don't think you would go wrong with Ted's or Rob's barrels. Make certain you establish what your expectations are up front. I.E. return policy, guarantee of a tool mark free bore etc. Now a few reamer marks may not be an issue, however they do detract from our highest expectations. Down range performance is the real indicator, but all things being equal if you ordered a reamer free barrel you should get what you ordered...... Now thats inspection under normal standard bore scope magnifications.

I have got one on my 300 wm and shoot it almost exclusively past 500 yards. 3 to 4" groups are the norm at 560 with most of group being horizontal (wind or trigger control) Shot it to 700 on Monday with great results. Very easy to clean and the velocity I get from it is great. Must be tight.

Buy one of Ted's barrels and you will not be disapointed. I own several of his barrels and everyone has been a gem. I would like to see Ted get a 1/8 twist button in 7mm and get his .17 and .20 cal barrels up and running.

Bill's guns in Burns Lake uses Gaillards barrels on almost all the guns he builds . Myself and another fella used Bills 6-284 bench gun ( with Gaillard Barrel )at one of our 1000yrd fun shoots and the four groups(5 shot ) we posted were 4-3/4" 5-1/4" 5-1/2" and a 10" that 4 of the bullets were in 3" and the other got away for one reason or another.
The barrels seem to work well in all contours light or heavy.

Ive got one of Ted's on my 6.5-284 on a PGW M15 action. Shoots consistant 5 shot groups in the 6"s and every no and then in the 4"s. Shot one group at 1050yds 3.8". Will not shoot 5" groups though. Go figure.

Would he, or does he offer any barrels for the AR15's that would be comparable to the Douglas or Kreiger "SPR" barrel? Or any other Canadian barrel maker for that matter?

Hey Mooshunter

What type of bullets are you shooting if they are the VLD like the sierra 142's boat tails in a long tube 28-32" your not alone allot of people have had similar experiences. The boat tails do not want to settle down at 100yards. You may find better results if you shoot groups at 200 yards and see what happens.
Folks having the same situation as you tried flat based bullets and notices a siginficant difference in there 100 yard group size.

I recall Shehane Tracker saying that the barrels built for 1000 bench rest and F class were not designed for the closer distances of the 100 and 200 yard bench rest game.

P.S. 3.8" at 1050 yards is a terrible grouping i would get ride of that barrel, and being such a nice guy i will buy it from you so you won't be burden with it any longer.

Ted Gaillard offers his barrels as a unfinished blank and you will have to have a barrel turned and chambered to your rifle. They work very well on AR's if you can find someone to fit the barrel to your upper.
Good Luck
John

I've got a Gaillard barrel on my PGW M15 in 260 Rem. I've never shot anything that sweet in my life. 100m 10 shots one hole!!! Will be putting a gaillard barrel on my next venture. As I just happen to have a spare M15 action... Perhaps a 6mmBR.

My Son Has One In 6.5x284 And Shoots 1000 Yd Best Was 4 3/8 Inch. Bills Guns In Burns Lake Put A Borescope In My New 6ppc He Is Building And It Looks Every Bit As Good As Some Of The Major Us Made Barrels.

I've got one in 6.5x55 that I put on a P-17. The barrel is a fairly heavy contour.

It shoots tiny groups and cleans up easily. Truly a world-class barrel.

Mr. Gaillard's service was also incredibly prompt.

I've had two experiences with these excellent barrels, both were heavy .224 fluted. The first belonged to a pal of mine, was installed on a 788, and chambered for the .22-250. What was interesting about this barrel was that the gunsmith screwed up the chambering, and the chamber was cut visibly off-set to the bore. The fired cases ended up being the strangest wildcat you've ever seen. But believe it or not this thing would shoot into a dime at 200 yards on demand - weather permitting.

The other barrel was my 1:7 twist .222 on a M-700 action. On demand I could cut the chains which held the steel plates for pistol shooting at the range, calling first one side of the link than the other. This is by far the most accurate rifle I have ever owned.

I've had one smith I trust mention that the few Gaillard barrels he has chambered seemed very soft. He was thinking that they might be great for .223/.308s but but rather short lived when chambered for the barrel burners like 6.5-284 etc...The experiences above seem to refute this idea.
