game bags

Many years ago I bought game bags from Princess Auto that fit a whole moose, breathable and washable. My wife also sewed me one from a king size bedsheet that takes a whole moose or elk, breathable and washable as well. Princess Auto doesn’t always have them but worth checking out.

Another vote for pillow cases. Personally I don't like those cheesecloth stretchy type of game bag. For a moose you might need to go custom and sew up a bed sheet as mentioned above.

what game bags would those that use them recommend for moose size quarters? do the front legs need to be removed from the rib cage or can they be left on and bagged?

It is a bunch easier to handle if you remove the front leg from the ribs.
6 bags will handle a mature bull in a pinch, but 8 is ideal.
5 big bags, and 2 or 3 smaller ones for neck/backstraps/tenders/organs.

Caribou Gear makes pretty good bags that are light and tough, as does Argali. Pricey though.

Alaska game bags from Cabela's easily hold complete quarters and are good quality and reusable.

Bring 2 sets of game bags because one set may get trashed by the time you get back to camp.

We usually do a second detailed cleanup once back at camp and use fresh bags before hanging.

Cheese cloth style are best for breathability IMO.

I also like the cheaper Alaskan game bags but we usually use large contractor garbage bags until the meat is back at camp and then give it a bit of a cleaning then put it in the mesh bags. As long as its not too hot that is. Heat and black garbage bags wouldn't mix.

Caribou game bags are pretty good and mine have seen some serious usage over the years. I've also used Alaska game bags, mostly for moose and elk and they work great but definitely don't last as long as the Caribous, however they're very easy to use and relatively cheap.
