One of my semi-retirement hobbies is running a "trapline" of game cameras on our own property. We are blessed (at times cursed?) with a wide variety of game and get some cool pics. About the only thing I hunt anymore is Ruffies, the King of all game birds imho.

This very small solo black bear showed up on my game cameras about two years ago, got a few pics of it last year, and I was lucky enough to get some more pics of "it" again just y-day when I went around and pulled my sd cards.

My question for the experienced black bear people is: Can I put something out to delay the bear, cause it to sniff around and check "whatever" out just so I could get a few more pics on my camera? I don't wish to actually bait the bear, as I have no desire to shoot it, plus I don't want to food habituate the bear either.

There are bee hives about 200 meters up the trail from where I got the last pics but the bear learned the hard lesson of electric fences two years ago when it was very little and has shown no interest in returning to the hives.

Are bears curious enough to investigate something hanging from a twine in the trees and blowing in the wind? ie. a plastic bag

Any suggestions appreciated.

Take some bacon grease and smear it all over a rock or tree trunk in front of camera. He wont leave until its all gone or his tongue is raw.

Edit. Reread the thread LOL

Maybe a feather tied to some fishing line? Bears are very curious.

Thanks for the idea DVXDUDE. Plus a feather is natural, it could easily bump into them in nature, so I wouldn't be creating a problem.

At some point the bear might get shot by one of the hunters that I give permission to each year, but right now it is still quite small so I think it is safe for now.

Black bears have always tried to EAT any trail cameras I've put out. The bigger challenge for me is to get the bear to stand far enough away so I have more than pics of eyeballs, teeth and fur.

not exactly natural....but you could pop some popcorn and scatter it in the area. if the birds and racoons don't get to it first the bear will for sure stick around eating it.

I have added sugared drink mix recipe to my popcorn (kinda makes a caramel popcorn) and put it in and around my bait barrel. bears love it!

if you only did it once I doubt you would get the bear habituated to the area.

9.3 Mauser...I have heard that a number of times and it has sort of been in the back of my mind that one of these days I will find a destroyed/ruined or missing camera. Guess it is part of the price if you want to "play the game".

Akito...No racoons here to worry about. Plenty of birds though. Popcorn might work very well but I am just not sure about crossing the line to actually feeding the bear "human" food?? Probably just me being anal.

Thanks guys.

Buy a couple of those little boxes of powdered strawberry jello mix and sprinkle the contents on the ground 10-15 yards from your camera.
They’ll sniffle around long enough to get some nice pictures. Don’t track the stuff to your camera or get strawberry powder on it :)

bacon grease or sprinkle koolaid 10 yards away from your cam pretty much anything sweet make sure your camera is well secured and spray it down with scent killer you don't want to come back to an eaten trail cam
