Nothing's better than spending a nasty rainy day @ Hartford Gun Club for the 2011 CT State IDPA Championship. I prepared myself this time around since I still remember what happened when I shot in a downpour in 2008. So I equipped myself with a cheap rain jacket, boots, and plastic bag covered feet. Let's get it on!

Last time I shot this match was in 2009 with my Glock 22. Just now I read what I wrote back then (because my YouTube is like my little shooting diary) and it looks I was so optimistic of my performance. Only one miss and one procedural...where did that go this time? Hmmm...within the first four stages I had a couple of non-threats, an FTN, quite a few misses, and a death jam. Nevertheless, that's why I like the CT match, they do not accept mediocrity in their stages. I think this is the first time at an IDPA match where people were saying, "How the heck am I going to do that?"

Due to my recent change in my grip, the slide release just would not work the way it was designed for...I'm not a multi-tasker enough to count shots so I can't count the number of times I ran dry and had a confused two seconds of "why isn't my gun shooting like it's supposed to?"...guess I'm going to have to get rid of my extended slide release and replace it with the flat one.

Next week it's back to USPSA with a trip to Nebraska and Area 3! Until then, excuse me while I clean my mud-soaked magazines and clothes.

My brother came and took random footage...just had to upload it because I think it's a hell of a lot more interesting than even shooting footage sometimes. Also played around with my Adobe Premiere settings to see if I could retain at least some of the 1080 video quality. So if this doesn't come out well...well back to the drawing board.

Get ready for a lot of "random" footage come Nationals.

English Bob : Well, actually, what I heard was that you fell off your horse, drunk of course, and that you broke your bloody neck.
Little Bill Daggett: I heard that one myself, Bob. Hell, I even thought I was dead 'til I found out it was just that I was in Nebraska.

The Area 3 Championship match is located in the beautiful Heartland Public Shooting Park at Grand Island, Nebraska. We just missed a violent rainstorm (which delayed us for a few minutes) but by 9 o'clock the sun peeked out and we moved along quite nicely. I originally planned to shoot my production rig, but after seeing the hoser-type stages I changed my mind...I mean, who can say no to using an open gun when targets are less than 10 yards away from you? That being said, I'm pretty disappointed on my performance. Had 1 mike on half my stages and pretty much all of them were me being too impatient to watch the dot. I would have felt better if they were from far swinger targets, but nope...they were all less than 10 yards away...no hard cover...just completely open easy targets. I learned it doesn't matter if the target is 20 yards away with a hundred no shoots rotating in from of it, or 2 yards away open for the taking. They are both worth the same points. Oh well, lessons learned...or rather acknowledged. Shoot, if I learned all my "lessons" I would be a master shooter now....but that wouldn't be fun would it?

Nevertheless, thumbs up for Area 3! Since my goal is to catch all the Areas (kinda like Pokemon), I still got to schedule Areas 1, 2, and 5...in a couple of years or so...dang this stuff costs a lot.

Next up is a rainy Havard match followed up by the evil Walls of Steel and another IDPA regional match. Whoop whoop!

Local match @ Havard, MA...I was pretty dead from Nebraska but I couldn't say no to a nearby match. I was pretty blah, but hey I hit a clean classifier and got a stage win saving babies, I'll take that!

It's August...you know what time of the year that is, yup it's six stages of all-steel mayhem. There seemed to be more of the little steel buggers compared to last match....or they spread them throughout six stages instead of just one or two (to prolong our suffering of course). Other than my trigger happy first stage and my "damn why can't I hit these things" fourth stage, I am very satisfied with my performance. I even did better during my second go around with my G34 compared to my performance at Mini Walls of Steel.

Bad news is that my brass is barely trickling out of my G34 (had a couple of jams today) as of today's match. Replaced the recoil spring and scrubbed the extractor. Let's pray that it works well tomorrow at the New England IDPA Regionals!

12 challenging stages @ the New England IDPA Regionals - I shot a whole lot better than in 2009 (ummm...and I actually finished it this time around)...must have been from a couple of things...like not shooting revolvers and the fact that my Glock sights were actually aligned this time around. Nevertheless, other than two disappointing stages in the beginning of the day and in the last of the day, I was pretty happy with my performance.

The greatest thing of all was that I had somewhat decent indoor stages. Obviously I'm not going to be even close to the top people, but I can at least say that I'm not in the bottom bottom bottom pile for once.

What really helped me was shooting 500 rounds yesterday @ Walls of Steel. After concentrating on my dot and front sights and taking controlled shots, my aim sure improved.

Did I shoot good enough to get anything? Probably not, but I can at least say that this was probably my best IDPA performance so far this year.

All right...so there goes my last IDPA match for almost 2 months. Now it's all USPSA baby! A little practice @ Manville tomorrow followed by New Bedford then Area 8- then Area 7 then to Nationals...busy busy busy!

There are 8 simple steps to shooting at a USPSA match. Follow them and join the fun! I forgot two steps...become a member and shoot. Oh well. Obviously I am having way too much fun with this extra footage that I'm getting. Other than a horrible classifier (what's new?) I didn't do too shabby. I got one more local match before I go on an open spree. Decided to change over to open division in Area 8 so no production gun until the 2nd week of Nationals. Racing time!

As usual the cameraman was my brother. I do the simple part, takes two seconds to put the video together. Takes much more talent to catch the footage.

Area 8 Championships was held in Fredericksburg R&G Club with 10 stages and a boatload of shooters from across the US. Let's start with the good news...cause you do have to look at the positive side of things. Good news #1...I didn't get DQ'ed. Good news #2...the lunch truck's sweet tea was absolutely delicious. Good news #3...we didn't have any rain and the weather was downright beautiful. Good news #4...the ROs were great people!

All right, that's my positive thinking for this match. Other than that, this was my worst performance ever. I do tend to say that a lot don't I? Seriously though, this one takes the cake. I did so bad I almost got last place (yeah that bad). The last time my C-more dot got "off course" was in 2009 in a Harvard local match. For those wondering, yes I did do a sight-in during range practice before the match so I didn't think much of it when I start Saturday. Nevertheless, I started feeling paranoid on Stage 10...kinda ignored the gut feeling though. Not a good thing to do. After the sight got re-zeroed I never recovered from my experience in Stage 1. Someone told me that it was like I didn't trust my dot, which is true and is a bad position to be in when that is the one thing that you are supposed to rely on for accuracy.

The last thing you want to think of when you walk up to shoot a stage is, "Let's hope the bullets fly where I want them." Unfortunately that's pretty much was in my brain for the remaining 7 stages. I don't think the sight was the problem Saturday as much as it was me maintaining my cool. Really, this dot thing happens plenty of times...well maybe not in a major match, but I've seen it happen to others. You fix it and you move on. However, this is the first time all year where I could no longer function in a match after one major hiccup.

Regrouping time...got a week to zero it in, shoot it a hundred times to make sure I'm confident enough to hit where I need to hit, and prepare for Area 7. Time is a movin'!

PS...I experimented and got a new camera designed for harsher environments. Unfortunately it films in .MTS Sony form which is very anti-Premiere Elements 4. So here's 1st person for this video.

Hope this brings out a little of Area 8 from a different viewpoint (my bro). Random footage w/ Squads 24, 34, and 39 from the Area 8 Championships. I had mucho footage to play with so it was a pain trying to condense as much footage into 5 minutes. I prefer 4 minutes max (since I think that's as far as our attention span can go nowadays) but hey we can all pay attention for one extra minute eh?

This can be viewed in 1080 HD. Converted to H264 29.97 fps.

The Area 7 Championships took place in Harvard, MA with 10 well rounded stages packed full of fun. For once I didn't have to fly hundreds of miles or trek through hours of torturous traffic to go to a major USPSA match. Nevertheless, my experience today versus last week was like night and day. For those wondering, after a couple days of trying to fix my C-more, I decided to replace it with a new one. The old one just could not hold a zero. Lo and behold I actually hit my targets. *shocker* I had one mike (from the failed ballerina move) and one no-shoot. Though I had a lot more Ds than I would have liked, I say that's better than getting 17 mikes in one match....just sayin'.

Like the Vermont Classic and Texas State Limited, I shot better in a relaxed atmosphere with familiar faces. Having smiling ROs help too.

I have 5 days to prepare for the Nationals, which means that I should review the stage descriptions, dryfire my Glock open/production guns, and do sprints across my backyard...but I probably will buy tickets to Vegas shows, brush up on my poor Texas Hold'em skills, and check my bank account to make sure I have enough dough to play mucho slot games and 1 dollar blackjack. Yeah, I've got my priorities down.

PS No "The Cameraman" here this time around so this video is all I have for Area 7. Sorry folks.

I just realized that my videos are so much more boring when I don't mess up. :)

The USPSA Nationals 2011 was held in the usual Desert Sportsman Range in Las Vegas, NV. With a variety of short, medium, and long courses, this year worked on competitors' strengths and weaknesses. I was pretty disappointed on my performance. I thought I could improve a little from 2009, but I actually did worse. Stages were pretty simple to break down and weren't too complicated. However, if there's one thing I never do well in, it's classifiers. And other than a couple of stages, I felt like I was in classifier city.

The question for most competitors was, "how much are you willing to risk?" Go fast and get dinged with a mike/no-shoot, or go slow and get a crappy hit factor? Well, I never found that middle ground. I usually went too slow, but for those few that I pushed the limits just a tad, I got a mike. And for these stages, a mike (or worse, a mike and no-shoot) is like going 4+ seconds slower than the next competitor that didn't miss.

Good news is that my gun ran perfectly, I got my major power factor that I wanted, and I got to meet some great folks. There's always next year (if I'm still here) I guess.

Got three more videos to go...production and B-Roll for both matches. Let's keep 'em rollin!

The 2nd half of the USPSA Nationals had some familar stages, but this time I put away my frankenstein gun and replaced it with a good 'ole Glock 34 production gun. Though I haven't shot my production rig for a while, I have done my fair share of IDPA matches with it so I got used to the whole reloading every 10 rounds thing pretty quickly. The amusing thing is, I'm sure you can tell from just looking at this video, I shot a hell of a lot better with my production gun. I really (and I mean really) focused on my front sights to the point where I would make pointless follow-up shots...we are talking about As on As or Cs on As. The video says 10...it's actually more than that, it's tramatizing enough to see how much time I wasted already...don't want to relive it. :)

I wish I made up shots when I had Ds or Ms...because I had a lot of Ds. Usually those were committed when I was on the move or pushing a tad harder than my level. Though I shot like a turtle, I didn't make nearly as many catastrophic mistakes this time around. Compared to my abysmal 44.12% performance in L-10 in 2009 (with 19 misses) I got a better 59.05% this time around...not bad for a lowly C shooter.

Next time I signup for the Nationals I'll got for production for sure. I'm iffy about whether I should shoot Limited-10 or Open...I think open is more fun...you know for the cool factor and all.

I got two more videos...both B-Rolls with video footage taken from "The Cameraman" coming right up!

This is a behind the scenes look at our squad in the USPSA Nationals Open/Lim-10 match. As usual all actual footage was taken from "The Cameraman". I had tons of footage to play with, which is surprising since he wasn't with us for the majority of the match (he was stalking the super squad girls lol). Condensed this to 5 minutes..which is a miracle. I'll try to do the same for the production match. If I included everything this could have easily run for 30 minutes plus.

My last of the USPSA Nationals videos. This features squad 8 with a mixture of limited and production shooters (including yours truly). I had to extend this one to 6 minutes because of the amount of content I wanted to stick in there.

These b-rolls are nothing compared to what's in store from "The Cameraman". It's going to be the most epic USPSA Nationals video on YouTube. I am not saying that lightly either.

I have one more local match tomorrow and a little bigger state IDPA match @ Pennsylvania next week. Looking forward to it!

The PA State IDPA match was held at the Blue Ridge Cherry Valley Rod & Gun Club @ Sciota, PA. Since the match was only four hours away, I just had to sign up for one more major IDPA match. With 14 stages covering 7 bays, the match was fast paced the entire way through.

After my first stage fumble, I realized that I had little chance to get any top prize (errr...not like I ever expect it lol) so I kinda cruised for the remaining 13 stages. Actually I think I shot better because I was so relaxed. There weren't any field type courses (understandable considering the size of the shooting range), which means you had to shoot perfectly (and super fast) to win.

I'm happy of my low points down in this match (26)...wasn't the fastest shooter, but I shot a little more accurately at least.

This will probably be my last IDPA match and my last shooting match for a couple of weeks. I'm planning to shoot a fun steel challenge match in November. I will probably suck at it...but I always wanted to do it once my life.

Until then, B-Roll footage of this match coming up in a day or two!

The Harvard Sportsmen's Club in Massachusetts held a Steel Challenge match with 8 fast-paced steel stages and A LOT of shooters. Wonderfully run, HSC really pulled out the stops in very cold temperatures to keep things moving and grooving. This was my first SC match ever. The only comparisons I can make to this is the Walls of Steel *shiver*. That being said, other than the fact that steel is technically a draw in to both matches, the similarities end there. The main difference is that SC has static targets and an average is taken from multiple rounds.

After shooting all 8 stages I can tell why this sport draws in so many people. It's simple, it's super fun, and the math ain't complicated. I can see how shooting SC matches can improve my draw, transitions, and (most importantly) my aim. Now all I need to do is win the lottery so I can build my own personal SC gun range.

That being said, as you can see things started pretty well. Starting in my 3rd stage the C-more started to go to la la land. I know I know, this is the 2nd time this happened. And to answer the question beforehand, this is a new C-more that I used during the Nationals (it's not the Area 8 one). Again, I loctited everything in the day before at an indoor range to make sure everything worked well. It's all good though, if this was the Nationals I'm sure my heart would've dropped. But this was a fun match and after stage 5 I decided to just do a back and forth gun switch with my brother's G34 instead.

As you can see I suck at shooting steel with iron sights! I would love to make a similar airsoft setup in my backyard. Might be the perfect time to do it since shooting season is pretty much done.

This might be my last match in a long while. We'll see how everything pans out. Until then....
