I have been offered a Gamo 177 break action which has, attached to the muzzle, a suppressor or silencer. Seller insists this attachment is legal in Canada - I would be grateful if any member of this forum has any advice to offer me on this subject. In the past I believed that suppressors and silencers were illegal in Canada.

Any advice most welcome.

Thanks

If this rifle was originally bought in Canada, it is very unlikely that anything at the end of the muzzle is a suppressor or a silencer. Try shooting it to see how loud it is. What model is it? Gamo Silent Stalker? Whisper?

Thanks very much for your comment: I assume that you too believe tend to that it is not a legal device in Canada?

The gun is a Silent Stalker[ 1300 fps with light pellets ] model and it is fitted with some sort of sound suppression device which does muffle the discharge when using heavy pellets. Seller says it was purchased from Cabelos two years ago....This deal makes me nervous, especially with the recent court reclassification of gas power guns ....I think that I will pass on it !

Thanks again

If the gun is over 500 fps it's considered a firearm. A such anything attached to the barrel to reduce noise is a suppressor (silencer.)

Don't risk it.

The Gamo Silent Stalker sold at Cabela's today has no attachments at the end of the barrel

It was explained to me that the extra tube around the barrel does have some sound suppressing effect but not in a way that is considered a sound suppressor in Canada. It stops the sound of the vibrating barrel; not the sound of the discharging gasses or the moving projectile. Apparently the sound emanating from the outside of a barrel is rather significant on an air rifle.
I am not sure if this is the attachment that you are looking at.
