Would anyone happen to know the correct gap between the cylinder and barrel ? It is tight at present as a "smith" replaced a 4" .38 Special with a 5" .38 S+W pipe.also need correct caliber re-stamped.Would this need to be machined or gently jeweler filed? Re-bluing may be in order.Thanx Harold

Well, 38S&W barrel has bigger bore dia (couple of thou) than 38 special and chambers of the revolver still being 38 special will have throats way to small for proper gun accuracy. Insist on proper bore dia barrel being instaled, no more than .358".
I did couple of revolver conversions from prohibited to restricted and IMHO the lesser the gap the better as long as there is no draging between barrel and cylinder. Aim for .002"-.003" gap.
Factory gap? I have seen them as much as .005" and more.
