Garand bayonet

I was rummaging around in the bayo drawer and found two for the Garand. One is the usual 10", cut down from a 1917 Springfield.

The other is a 1942 16". I did not know they made that size and I guess most of them got cut down too. Anyone know the story on this? I gather it is worth more. ?? It is the only 16" I have ever seen.

The M-1 16" version is the original bayonet for the Garand basically the same as a the Springfield 1905 except for the bakelite grips. With scabbard they usually sell for around $400.00

The original 16 " M1905 bayonets were made by both Springfield and Rock Island and are so marked. These had wooden grips(scales) and were issued with a variety of scabbards.
Your 16" UC bayonet is a WW2 vintage M1905, also known as a M1942. These were made by a variety of contractors with either brown or black(more common) grips and were issued with plastic scabbards.
The short 10" bayonets were either newly made as the M1 bayonet, or were cut down from any make of M1905 bayonet and and are known as the M1905E1. All of the 10" blade models had the plastic grips.
All of these bayonets fitted both the M1903 Springfield and the M1 Garand. Prices vary depending on maker, condition and originality. There are newly made repros as well. Ebay is chock-a-block with these bayonets nowadays.

My M5 was $25, a couple of years ago. Dunno if the price has changed much since then.

The M5 is indeed anywhere from $25 to $50. could be more depending on buyer and desperation, The 1942 style can go from $60 to $140 once again depending on buyer and knowledge. The old 1905 to 1920 sixteen inch are worth more with an original leather scabbard, $300-500 and from $200-$400 with the newer, hard scabbard. Some people pay more for old cut downs than the 1942 and 1943 variety but it all comes down to personal choice on the tip of a cutdown [modified]. Some like the spear point of the original and some prefer the point on top or "bowie" style.

The m10 scabbards for the 10 inch blades sell for $60 to $80 on their own. A little more for the 16 inch scabbards.
