Garand Calibres

There were early experimentals in .276. There were later experimentals during the period when the 7.62mm was being developed; some were converted to 7.62mm either with chamber inserts or new barrels.
Civilian conversions to other calibres have been done, like .270 and 7.62. An M-1 could be adapted to most any cartridge the same length or shorter than the '06, with the same head diameter. Catch is to get the barrel.

When Springfield Armoury Inc first made their copy it came in .270, .30-06 and one of the .35 calibres. Forget which one.
Some guy Stateside was making them in a ludicrous calibre too. One of the .45 rifle calibres, I think.
"...have a custom one made..." It'd cost a fortune. Not impossible though. There are lots of match barrels being made Stateside in both .30-06 and .308.

Krieger and Wilson make M-1 barrels. If they are set up to do an 8mm bore, I don't know why they couldn't contour a blank for the M-1. If you are serious ($) you could contact them and ask.

"...had a .243 Garand..." It's been a very long time, but I don't recall the M-1 coming in .243. The M1A certainly did though. We had a .243 Supermatch in the shop I worked in.

Gentlemen,
Ordnance started with the idea of the .276 Cal. They also looked at the .256 Cal. What is odd is that both of these carried the following:
140 gr at 2600fps.
As we know Ordnance went with the 30.06 Cal. I hope this data helps.
Thanks again
Clancy

You may be right sunray, I might be mixing up the M1 and M1A. I've got the ad in an old magazine around here somewhere. I'll see if I can dig it up.
