I am watching the HBO movie "House of Saddam", and apparently Saddam used to hunt rabbits and other things with an M1 Garand. The scene shows him and his party carrying Garands. Of course, this was when they were CLOSE American Allies.

Yeah, I saw that also. Are you sure he used an M1? The movie makers probably just chose it because it was old looking.

Man, those Iraqi Rabbits must be tough ####ers if you need a Garand to hunt them.;)
 
I'm pretty sure I seen pictures of him with a Garand. Wouldn't surprise me as the USA was suppling them with everything else. The Garand would be a personal touch that would put him(in his mind) above everyone else in the country style wise.

Remember that Iran was lavishly provided with Garands and other US equipment during the time of the Shah. It is reasonable to assume that many of these were collected by the Iraqis during the Iran-Iraq war which generally went in Iraq's favour.This was a miserable conflict which saw the Ayatollah and company throwing away thousands of poorly trained and ill-armed kids in frontal assaults against the Iraqi army. Many of them were simply ground to a pulp under Iraqi tank tracks.
