Had the Garand out the other day and on my 2nd round there was a bang as expected but the bolt locked open, mag went out the top. Found the brass and it blew the primer right out. After that would only dent the primers, disassembled the rifle/bolt and couldn't find any problems - firing pin is not broken.

Any ideas what the problem could be?

thx JJ

Shooting some factory hunting ammo that I had laying around loose, so no idea of age etc

oh jeez. check your op rod for any cracks or bends. im assuming its a heavy bullet with a big charge behind it. garands were built to handle 178ish gr bullets with slow burning powder or smaller not bigger,

"...assume that the rod should be straight..." Nope. Op rods have a bend in 'em. Don't straighten it.
"...disassembled the rifle/bolt..." Did you take the bolt apart or just the rifle? You may still have a busted FP. Can't think of any other reason for the failure. Not at home to look in my manuals.
Go here and download the M1 Rifle manual(free, of course. Note the need for the provided UN & PW.). FM-25-5 and TM-90-1275.

Disassembled the bolt and everything looks good. Am going to try some other rounds today as maybe they where just hard primers? Usually shoot surplus, this happened with some old hunting rounds.

Where can I download that manual? you forgot the site....

Ok ran some surplus through it and it rock n' rolled no problem - guess just goes to show that sometimes the simplest solution is the best - in this case I was way over analysing the problem instead of just trying some different ammo.

since I have you gurus on the line what causes the enbloc mag to eject while still holding a few rounds?

Thanks to all for your input.

JJ

Good to hear. Now find out wth u were shooting before that caused the damage. Bullet size and case mfg

Bad en bloc causes issues

There a bit of a list of possible causes for a partially loaded enbloc to eject. its been covered here before. Clip latch can be worn. Weak clip latch spring. The enblocs notch for the clip latch can be worn. greek production clips have been known to be glitchy. Bent follower rod. Binding at the rod due to bent bullet guide. Oprod catch accelerator bent. Theres certainly a few more

That is backwards, Garands like faster powders, not slower. The two best choices are IMR4064 or either 4895. Slow burning powders produce higher pressures at the gas port and that beats the rifle up and can bend the op rod.

Depending on bullet weight, for heavier bullets slower burn for light bullets faster burn

Mark is correct. Not in a Semi Auto. Semi Auto's require a particular pressure curve for correct function irrespective of bullet weight.

I find 48grains of 4895 behind a 150 grain bullet with a cci large rifle primer works perfect in a Garand.. Federal also makes a specific Garand Cartridge if you don't reload, not cheap though!
