Good day,

A little over a year ago i purchased a Garand off of here. now everytime i have ever shot it it does not seem to cycle. It will fire one round and then then not cycle the action, i have to manually open the action, and as with garands that means the other 7 rounds come flying out the top. I have had one clip cycle the way it was suppose to. NOW i have taken it completely down and rebuilt it and did not see any damaged parts or missing parts, but i am not an expert. I am planning a rebuild of this gun inthe next 2 months, does anyone know what the problem could be?

It is a great shooter, and has a amazing barrel (danish) i believe and has a 1944 Springfeild Reciver,

thanks again for the help in advance,

Gavin

If you manually cycle an M-1, the cartridges in the magazine should NOT come out. Unless you push the release. Have a good look at the clip latch. How many different clips have you tried?

For a normal Garand, the clip with rounds would not come flying out when you open the action. They could indicate either your clip latch is worn or the clip latch spring is weak. The op-rod catch would be next in line to look at for wear.

I'm with Hitzy - Check gas cylinder and lock. You can take the plug off and have a look. Make sure that you are not covering up the gas port when you tighten down the lock. You should see the top of the hole (or a bit more) when looking at the top of the op rod (action closed of course).

Also, check your front sight base. Some gas cylinders have had a "National Match" conversion to the gas cylinder, where the gas cylinder has been saw-cut just below the front sight. This was done to tighten the whole gas assembly to the barrel when the front sight screw gets tightened-down. If you have a "saw-cut" gas cylinder and the front sight is not torqued down, then gas would be escaping penventing semi-auto functioning.

Lastly, if you have a weak or damaged oprod spring - replace it. Always a good idea and a cheap part to boot.

If you can bring it to the Woodstock Gun Show this weekend (26 Mar) I could take a look at if for you, plus I have some spare parts incase something is worn or broken. ( I may have a table at the Ancaster show as well, but that may be a little iffy with the wifey...)

Cheers
Dean

Maybe you are experiencing a composite problem:absence of sufficient gas into the piston assembly thus no ejection and recoil may also jar the clip latch loose.
The clip latch thing is an easy one.
For the lack of ejection, like they say before: check if sufficient gas pressure is present at the port.
BTW, is the action binding when there's no clip inside? I would check its movement without any spring and look for abnormal abrasion marks on the moving parts.
Good luck!
PP.

A worst case scenario for inadequate gas pressure is the possibility of the piston or gas cylinder being badly out of spec., and the gas is blowing past. Piston heads can be replaced with larger sizes, and/or the gas cylinder might need replacement, if this is the case. Dean's offer is a good one.

thanks for all the good help, but i think i will head up to the wood stock gunshow with it as i am not an expert, i use the release to openthe action and have used 15-20 different clips, that work in other garands, i jsut got back inthe counrty yesterday and this is my first project now that i am home,

thanks for all the help guys,
gavin

Well imet Sgt. Striker at the Woodstock show today. Besides my close friends he is the First Gunnutz i have met in Person. I must say thank you to him as he was a great guy easy to talk to and more than knowledgeable about the Garand and my problem, we ended up replaced a bent part and the spring jsut in case. I am going to take it out shooting Tuesday or Wednesday to see how it fairs but i wanted to say thank you on here and to let everyone that he is a good guy, and i would say as close as to an expert on the Garand that i have ever met aso a BIg "THANK YOU" Again

Cheers,
Gavin
