Garand rear hand guard clip replacement?

Hello all ye milsurp experts,

How does one remove and replace the rear hand guard clip on an M1 Garand... most importantly without cracking the hand guard wood?

After removing the handguard from the rifle, the clip must be pryed off carefully. The clip have 2 small hole, i think that snap ring plier could be used to gently spread the clip to start removal, after the clip should be more easy to slide off.

There is a purpose made handguard clip removal/installation tool which makes this a snap. Without the tool you can fasten a length of wire to the hole in the left side of the clip (as viewed from the rear). Secure the free end of the wire in a vice then pull away from the vice until the left end of the clip is just clear of the wood. You can then roll the handguard to the left until it clears the wood. Re-install in reverse.
