is there any place to buy a new operating rod spring ?

i think mines abit on the weak side and i'd hate to fire it ... after seeing that one fella with a cracked receiver

thanks

Because wolf is making too much money in the USA, they temporarily don't ship to Canada, when they need our business, they will ship here again.....ahhhhhh no thanks. They lost a customer.

"...think mines a bit on the weak side..." What makes you think that? Cracked receivers are not caused by springs. And spring don't lose temper by being used.

Garand springs do become worn and distorted over time. Max/min on spring length is 20.25-19.75 inches. Springs should be full round w/o distortions or flats worn in them. Defective springs will affect functionality and weak/short ones will allow the bolt to batter the rear of the receiver with excessive force, which can contribute to cracking in this area. Springs should be lubed with a lt coat of grease. Numrich/GPC was recently selling replacement springs made by Fulton Armory, which are excellent. Avoid the Wolff springs as they are too stiff and can be excessively long.

Coil springs do become "set" to length during the manufacturing process.

In the case of a Garand recoil spring, they then sit in a tiny tunnel up at the front of the rifle and become HEATED rather violently, especially by rapid-fire strings.

The result is the spring LOSING some of its initial "set" owing to it becoming LESS ELASTIC from the heat.

Like me when I read a silly post, it is LOSING ITS TEMPER... literally.

So it shrinks in length.

Length is CRITICAL for the reasons that PURPLE has explained.

Anyone who has ever rebuilt an old flathead motor knows about spring shrink, how to check for it, what the minimum and maximum length of a given spring should be. The same idea holds for rifles, except more so: you are holding that thing a few inches from your face.

Thanks, PURPLE, for the specs on the M-1 spring. Mine is nice and stiff, but I think I'll check it, anyway.

thank you guys ! excellent info

well, upon measure the spring ...it turns out to be 18.5 inch long
I'll definitely be ordering one from brownells at 8 bucks a pop

how i knew ? well, aways back i usta shoot with a friend who had a breda ?? garand ... and the action on that would darn near tear your finger, if it got snapped in there
my H&R spring was much softer and wasn't so dangerous .. hah

after seeing on a forum ( maybe this one ) of a fella with a cracked receiver ..... and the op spring may contribute to that
- so i decided i better fix that while i'm giving it the once over ( had this one for almost 20 years and i couldn't live without it )
at one time i would done anything for a national match, but not if it meant given up this one

Avoid the Wolff springs as they are too stiff and can be excessively long.

I've used Wolf springs with great results, while initially they are approx. 21" long after a couple of thousand rounds there are about 20". Reliability with full power Garand loads has been excellent.
