Garand Stock Swap Question

My recently purchased Garand currently wears a black polymer stock. I got a wood stock set with it in the deal and would like to change it out.

Reading US Army Manual FM 23-5, it shows disassembly down to the point of removing the gas cylinder before the front handguard is removed. Do I have to pull it down that far to change out the handguard or will it come off with the gas system still in place? I would like to leave the gas cylinder alone if possible. If I am stuck with pulling the cylinder, do I need a special tool to pull the gas cylinder nut?

Thanks,
Mark

The gas cylinder should pull off by hand.

Following the manual, they pull almost everything out of the receiver before unscrewing the gas cylinder lock screw and removing the gas cylinder. At what point can I pull the cylinder, after removing the op rod? Or do I need to strip the receiver group as shown in the manual?

If anyone has an alternate field stripping procedure that takes me directly to removing the gas cylinder without pulling the entire receiver group down first, I would be very happy to see it.

Thanks,
Mark

Before removing the front handguard you must remove the following parts:
1-gas cylinder screw (you can use a screwdriver with a sufficiently wide blade for this or turn it out/in with a 1/4" socket drive inserted into the screw)
2-gas cylinder lock
3-gas cylinder

Some gas cylinders fit tighter than others. Some will pull off easily. Others require that they be driven off. If this is the case, invert the rifle and tap the cylinder forward by striking a hardwood block placed against the rear of the bayonet lug. Do not strike the gas cylinder or front sight directly with a hammer.
Re-assemble in reverse order being careful to insert the op rod piston into the rear of the gas cylinder as you work it back on the rifle.

+1, what purple said...

Is your wood stock set new or used? Does the front hand guard have the metal insert & cap installed?

BTW the garand is meant to be unassembled into all parts to be cleaned. Infact the front gas cylinder screw is actually a relief valve and needs to be free and clear of carbon.

To be clear, I can simply pull the action out of the stock, then pull the above parts and remove the handguard? I want to be sure I don't screw anything up on this, since it is my first time pulling down a Garand.

The wood set is used and the metal insert and cap are in place.

Thanks for the help, guys. I am being careful because I don't want to screw anything up on my new toy. The Garand is my grail milsurp and I want to ensure it has a long, productive life in my hands.

Yes. In fact, you don't even need to remove the barreled action from the stock to do this. Just be careful to orient the gas piston to enter the rear of the gas cylinder when you re-assemble it.
As you are in this for the long haul you should also practice stripping and assembling the rifle as per the FM23-5. The illustrations are easy to follow and you will want to strip the rifle so that you can inspect/clean/lubricate it(note the grease points).
