Was looking at op rods and on one site they had GI surplus rods with a 5/16 relief cut ? And a .525" min dia I'm guessing that falls within military specs but what's with the relief cut? Harold

The relief cut modification (which later became part of the normal production process) has been done to the vast, vast majority of M1 op rods. In fact, you've struck gold if ever you snag an M1 with an unmodified op rod!
