Hey was putting together my 10.5 Ar upper package.

IF the barrel is 10.5 inches. Can I fit a 10 inch full rail on the top? IF I go with this rail, what sort of low profile or smaller gas block do I need? Is there any problems with switching gas blocks? How hard is the install? Do I need a barrel wrench? Or is it just as simple as taking off old hand guards. Putting on new 10 inch one and removing gas block then putting on a smaller one or low profile one. ANybody recommend any parts for this sort of combo? Thanks for any help. :D

To rebarrel an AR you require action or barrel vise blocks along with a AR barrel wrench.

You can remove the gas block without removing the barrel.Depending on the gas block type, it is held on either with pins, set screws, or cross bolts. There are also two different types of gas block/sight base pins.Straigt pins & tapered pins.

The easiest way would be to have your original front sight tower cut/machined down so it fits under the rail.

Sometimes fitting a new gas block/sight tower can be tricky as they are not all interchangable between manufacturers.

I run a 10.5" LMT barrelled upper with the factory front sight and a Larue 7.0" rail system.Works for me just fine.

YEah the reason I asked, was that I was planning on running the 10 inch full rail all the way to the muzzle brake, fully covering the gas block. Then for sights I was gonna go with rail mounted front and rear pop ups. That way its all level. Is it as simple as cutting or grinding the exhisting gas block down in size to allow rail clearance? I sort of thought the gas block was a port mechanism with a gas chamber diverting gas back into the rifle to drive the action? How much can you cut down on it without puncturing or screwing it up? Or do I have it way wrong? Appreciate the help.

There is a step by step for a sight chop job down the page at this Arfcom link

you could also use a low profile gas block, one that was suggested to me that would not be effected by the barrel taper pin slots is a Badger Ordnance speedblock. Other ones have two set screws under it (vs one for the speedblock) so they may have problems if they fall in or near the slots. 0.02$
