Gas cylinder lock question

I found as I was preparing to shim my gas system on my M14s that by simple flipping the gas cylinder lock around, I did not need shims as it tightened up perfectly. Will reversing it cause any problem with the operation of the rifle.

Also, for the gas cylinder lock, how tight is too tight. I can hand tighten it to the 6o'clcok position, but it takes alot of effort. Is that good or am I flirting with too tight?

Flipping the gas lock is a very valid way of tightening the gas cylinder and is no problem at all, if anything it is the preferred way, if you can avoid shims then great! If you can hand tighten it it shouldn't be a problem.
 
How about if you can't remove the bolt to see if the gas cylinder need's shimming? I have already started to strip the bolt and have tried everything from placing the barrel in a vise and using a heat gun to warm it up, to using a wrench and hammer to move it. I truly have given up!

why would you strip the bolt, what does it have to do with gaz cylinder shimming? :confused:

do you mean the gas cylinder plug?
At first its hard to make it budge a bit, just use the combo tool and place it on the plug, then using a rubber mallet, gently tap the tool (be sure you're in the good way)

little shocks will help the thread move a bit, but don't hit too hard
 
Sorry I mean the gas cylinder plug is stripped. Also yes I did try to tape it several times with the rubber mallet.
