I was shooting the 6.5 x 55 today with some Seller and Belliot fmj rounds that are said to be a little hot, and noticed that some gas was escaping while I was firing. I have never noticed it before as I always wear goggles but in the rain today I couldn't see through them so opted not too.

The casing have always been a little dirty when firing these rounds, but today the bold face was covered in soot and the escaped gas was hard to miss.

My hand load which are a little light do not experience the same issue and all though some (5%) of the spent casing are a little dirty, they are nothing like the fmj rounds I was firing.

Any ideas? Headspace issue, unsafe firearm? Anything?

A gunsmith looked over the gun and noticed nothing wrong with the rig, but I am wondering if you guys have any ideas.

Thanks,

Could be the brass in the S&B is hard and not sealing properly, combined with a light load. Although S&B in the past has been somewhat "snorty".

Maybe the newer stuff is a lighter load?
