Could anyone fill me in on the benefits/down-side of gas operated vs. piston operated rifles. I am in the process of considering purchasing a rifle and would greatly appreciate feedback on this aspect.

The main difference is in were the gas starts working on things. With a gas piston a chamber holds the gas piston and then has an operating rod to take that force and use it to move the bolt. In a direct gas inpingment system a tube takes the gas and brings it back into the receiver and the bolt is directly actuated.

Direct gas inpingment has few parts and lower weight but it does bring stuff back into the reciever that can make it more difficult to clean. Gas piston systems have more parts but they keep the rest of the gun slightly cleaner.

There is an extensive thread on AR15.com regarding a "drop-in" piston system from Ares. It also discusses ad nauseam the pros and cons of a gas system vs a piston system in the AR15. Sit back and have a read: http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=118&t=257136

Ton of info!

Well, thanks for the info guys. Its taken me two days to get through that thread but I have come out feeling a lot more educated on the topic. I have only had experience with gas operated systems previously (C7-A1, C-6, C-9) and now feel more comfortable considering a piston operated system. I really appreciate the help!

Well I had the opportunity while on course at HK to see the new HK 416 in action and use the G36K. Since no gas travels back to the bolt or the reciever the internal components stay very clean. The "top end" needs only a wipe down after firing several hundred rds.The guns that I used worked with no stopages at all. All in all I was very impreesed with the HK system. Not only the G36 but the 416 as well, just my $.02 cents

While no one disputes the quality and advantages of the HK416, it must be pointed out that you cannot buy it as a civilian. HK will only sell this rifle to government agencies :(

Well its my understanding that is the policy right now. They are gearing up for military production , since it appears that the US Army is looking for a new weapon, thats just what I have heard. I think in time that complete upper kits will be available to the public.

Given the above statement it is possible there is some confusion here.

Most responses have compared two types of gas operated sytems. Piston vs direct impingment. However they are both gas operated systems.

The C7 uses direct gas impingment, the C6 and C9 use pistons. All are gas operated.
