Gas systems

Hi everyone,

I am thinking of either purchasing or building an AR of my own and had a question regarding gas systems. I am thinking of using a 14.5" barrel, but don't know which gas system to use: carbine or mid-length.

I'd love to hear your thoughts

Carbine, it's what that barrel length is meant to run with.

A dissipator is a 16" mid-lenght or carbine barrel with a low profile gas block and a FSB pinned where a rifle lenght gas system would be, and with rifle handguards.

The 14.5" mid-lenght is a very good shooting configuration.

I would love a dissipator upper with MOE rifle handguard.

Midlength gas systems mitigate recoil somewhat better than carbine ones, but the catch is that it can be harder to find parts.

I personally prefer a 16" midlength barrel with a 12" rail over a low profile gas block.

I've heard that the recoil is less on the mid-length, and I've also heard that it runs smoother when shooting many rounds through without cleaning or lubrication (farther away, hence less fowling). Any truth to that?

I haven't noticed any difference moving from an 11.5" carbine gas system to a 16" mid length. In theory the mid length is a smoother ride.

14.5" barrel with a mid length gas system is what the beard is running, and that's good enough for me.
