I am heading to Gaspe for moose in October. Has anyone been hunting there? What can I expect? I have a guide book and they seem to be positive about getting moose.

Just got back from Matane last Friday. Last census of the park showed about 40 animals per 10 square km's. I saw 20 in the 2.5 days that I actually spent hunting. It's mountainous (by eastern standards) - bring a variety of clothing.

I am going to the Matane area. The outfitter is sending exact instructions. My 30-06 and myself can't wait.
You're sure to enjoy yourself - it's a surreal experience. Do you know if your territory includes logging areas? We found the best places to hunt were 2-3 year old logging sites abutted by dense forest. To see any during the day, you would need to get into the woods. Morning and evening, they are roaming the open areas. 45 minutes prior to the end of legal light, the forest becomes alive - branches cracking, moose and other animals calling - it's very exciting.

The wife is from Port Daniel (not far from the town of Gaspe) and her father and buddies always get there Moose and Deer. Went to lay some apples down just 2 weeks ago in front of one stand he has. Next to a beaver pond. He was slappin his tail hard lol. Anyway on the way out a Doe and baby jumped out in front of the bike. Scared the s**t out of me cuz it was dark out lol. The black mud gets deep to, had to do the splits sitting on the bike in a few spots. Went to college in Gaspe, all the lads who got there Moose ride around with the head tide to there truck grill or hood for some reason. Being from New Brunswick I found it a bit, I want to say wierd, but I think its traditional. Yup great hunting though. Enjoy!

Oh ya, they show off there kill until the smell scares the girls away. I got to say again I`m not proud of that little Canadian, or should I say Quebecois tradition. Above and beyond wierd to me.
I'm curious as I've been pondering the idea of a 2009 moose hunt in that area... would you mind giving pricing/outfitter info? No worries if you would rather keep it personal.

Being a Quebec resident, I think the best bet is to put your name into the various draws. Matane being choice number 1, then Dunieres, then Chic-Choc. Price is dependent on "product" - check sepaq.com for details. For a 4-day, European plan hunt, figure about $1K per person, give or take a couple of hundred.
I live in Matane and i have to say that hunting in the Matane reserve is like going to the grocery store. Do not kill the first moose you see, choose the best for you. I like young buck better than the big old one because of the taste of the meat.
Talking about driving around with head on the vehicle like a trophy, i don't see it very often and i have to say that the vast majority of hunters find it stupid.

Hello,
I come from Gaspe (town) area and the forecast for moose hunting this year are exellent. But the succes depend on how and where you plan to hunt in this area.
Matane and Rimouski are better that Gaspe for moose hunting.
And for your information there are 4 hours driving between Gaspé and Rimouski
