Here's a couple before and after pics of my 51 Tula I refinished a couple weeks ago, it was part of Canam's sks and a crate of norc non corrosive last year.

Typical molot import, parkerized black with heavily sanded stock. Upper handguard was unsanded. I gave it 3-4 new coats of Amber shellac and buffed it with 000 steel wool to take down the shine. It's not as dark as the handguard but I'm happy with it, it's a shooter and not a safe queen so I figured it was about time to make it a bit easier on the eyes.

Have an svt40 with flaking shellac to do next, just have to figure out what to tint shellac with to match the dark red tone of it.

Great job! I've been seriously contemplating doing this myself and it will most likely end up as a winter project.

What kind of recoil pad and where did you find it?

Do it, due to mine being sanded smooth already it was easy. Schlac dries quick fast so I did four coats with 30-60 min between coats and then it hung for a week to fully dry and harden before I steel wooled it, all I did was wipe it down good with a wax and grease remover before the first coat.

The butt pad is from CGN member mobular, they're chicom sks butt pads. I grabbed some to extend the lop by an inch one this rifle and my other laminate, they're great and he sells them for around $12-15 with longer screws inc. I highly recommend them if you find the sks stock too short, I don't find the recoil much with or without it so can't comment on that lol.

I was terrified I was going to click on this and see another CrapCo special...

Thank you for restoring (well, only a little) my faith in humanity. Very nice, classy job of it.

Haha, I prefer a milsurp in wood furniture grelmar. The only aftermarket sks stock I like is the ati Monte Carlo but the stock wood furniture is still my favourite look.

@EL34/6L6 it was sanded too heavily to leave as it was, if it hadn't been sanded and had just showed its age I could see leaving it as is. I can always scuff the shine down more. It's more semi-gloss at the moment, although pure gloss looked pretty nice. It'll get scuffed up after I shoot it a few times lol.

Oh great, now I have to do mine too.
I've done a few beech and walnut stocks but wasn't sure what to do about the SKS. I know it's only a shooter but I don't mind having a prettier commie classic.
