Gearing up for coyote hunting

With the amount of coyotes around central alberta I've decided to phone land owners get permissions and hunt for coyotes hard this year. I'm just gearing up.

So far I have appropriate camo, Electric caller mouth calls and a 6mm creedmoor and a 6.5 grendel loaded up with 108 eld match and 95 gr vmax respectively. Also have a 223 upper for my modern sporter. I'm not worried about saving pelts as we are not legally allowed to sell pelts to anyone without a trappers permit. (As far as I understand it anyways).

I'm just wondering if I'm missing anything critical from my set up and if anyone has any input on how the 6mm creedmoor 108s perform on varmints. I know how the amax performs and its spectacular. Is the eld similar?
 
You don't need a licence in alberta to sell the hides. Aight from that get at er and smoke some song dogs. I'm sure the eldm will work on a coyote. I have used the 103gr in my 243 with success. Does make a mess of the hides.

Hunting coyotes is not like other game. Setups can change from day to day. Its a must to play the wind and that means changing setup places. I'm a bipod guy as well and or shooting stix if you don't want to spend the money. I will not allow anyone to hunt with me with out a rest as They all say I can hit them free hand until a yote comes running. Hand calls also work Hand in Hand with electronic calls. Hand calls freeze up in the cold as well so don't let the crap from others that hand calls are the way because they don't hunt that often in the cold if they have not seen it. When a dog gets into your shooting area, Bark loud and he will stop for a shot (most times) unless he has played that game. I use flip up/out caps on my scopes as blowing snow can fill the scope lens fast. Always start of low in volume and work up. Good Luck.
 
pelts are going for $100 again this yr , you don’t need a trapping licence if you are shooting them
I now a few guys down here that have killed 100 plus yotes the last 3 yrs in a row , some sell them green some have a guy that will skin , wash , sew the holes , and stretch them for a modest fee ,and then some do it all them self and high isn’t hard just takes time and place to do it so the misses doesn’t get mad lol
I here the fur prices are up there again this yr
I have a guy on a Hutterite colony that takes care of them for $25
Th silver belly yotes from Alberta are worth $$$$$
 
Shooting coyotes with your 6creed is losing you $25 minimum per coyote that you shoot. In Alberta you can sell whole frozen coyotes to whatever fur buyer will take them. Whole frozen prices are from $20-50 depending on condition.
As for the creedmoor I have tried a few bullets and so far any of the 105 or 107 grain bullets will dang near cut the coyote in half.
As for what to get for calling a nice facemask and a good bipod or shooting sticks would be on my list of things to get.
 
try a tough deer bullet. it will exit but not with a huge hole like softer bullets. I know some excellent coyote bullets for the 223 and 204 but cant help you with the 243/6mm. but I have skinned some for guys shot with tough deer bullets that did well. no sense in wasting a 120 dollar hide.

That HPBT is tougher than the Amax... It won’t grenade. It WILL blow bone shrapnel
out the offside occasionally if you hit shoulders or spine though...
 
if your calling - you should get them within 200 yards (likely) why not a 20 caliber like the 204 well within the cartridge sweet spot. A 35g Berger (sleeping pill) will not be a hide ripper.

I'd own a 204 if someone donated one to me but I have no desire to buy one. I have 2 uppers for my ms a 223 and a 6.5 grendel. We usually shoot them with a 243 and 75 gr vmax and it puts them down very hard.

I like to use a round bugger than what's needed so if I pull a shot and hit an animal bad it still dies. We also have an abundance of wolves around here and I'm pretty sure a fair amount of hybrids or 80 to 100 pound monster coyotes whatever you prefer.

I like to pack a gun big enough to smack a wolf at 400 ish meters. That's why I built a 6mm creedmoor stag 10

I would also include a good binocular/range finder in the kit. Probably one of the most important tools in the box for this sport. You will be using this a lot so be prepared to spend some money for this addition.
