Received my new Geissele SMR MK 1 rail yesterday and as it has been the last piece in my new upper build and I am still on vacation, I jumped on this install.

First off, the usual caveats, I am affiliated in no way with Geissele, Arms East etc.

Second, install methods are guidelines only, read the manuals and utilize this information at your own risk.

As you can see, this plain white box holds all of the goodness that is inside.

Arms East is shipping the latest revision available from Geissele. This has a number of enhancements from Geissele including lightening cuts in the top rail and much more material removed in what looks more like webbing on the bottom thirds of the handguard. It is also trimmed back more from the upper receiver and it does not fully envelope the upper anymore as it did on earlier versions. Small tabs (ears) add additional anti rotation. Basically, this piece is bombproof and the machining is gorgeous.

You can see below the anodizing on the unit itself and the three supplied rails varies. It is not off-putting to me, but be advised this colour is hard for them to anodize and pieces from batch to batch and even within batches have different shading. This is of no concern to me. The rail itself is difficult to photograph and looks different in photos and in different lighting, but it is not a match for FDE plastic from the manufacturers. I have chosen to go with black for the accessories on the rest of my rifle.

Parts for this rifle are as follows:

Noveske 12.5" crusader barrel, with factory pinned gas block
Battlecomp 1.0
Vltor MUR1 upper receiver - shell deflector only
STAG/CMT M16 BCG - HPT and MP tested (same as used on Noveske factory rifles)
Vltor BCM charging handle - medium latch
Vltor factory lower receiver
Geissele SMR MK 1, Mod 1, Rev. A rail
Geissele SSA trigger
Vltor imod stock
Magpul MOE grip
Magpul aluminum enhanced trigger guard
Knights Armament - micro flip up sights - 300m rear

Thanks to forum sponsors: Armtac, Arms East, One Shot Tactical and Cowboy Tactical Supply all of whom were a pleasure to deal with.

I assembled the upper using my Geissele reaction rod for ease with the vltor upper and frankly because I find it way better than the clamp style I have used in the past. You need a good vise though, here I am using my garage sale found Record No.4 vise - these are cheap and easy to find and are way better than the current chinese crap.

I now have a lifetime supply of the correct mil spec assembly grease…..

The quality of the supplied tool for the rail is excellent! This is no lightweight use it once and bend it piece. Far higher quality than the Daniel Defense wrench that comes with the RISII rails. Torque is recommended at 50 ft/lbs.

Always find it hard to get the gas tube pin installed, this one was not too bad….

The pin through the gas block was a S@# of a B@#$! to get in, marred the block a bit where the punch slipped. Gave it a bit of cold blue. Here you see me aligning the pin hole with a punch as I blue loctite the set screw down. I did this only to ensure the screw will not back out, as the pin is NOT going anywhere.

Here is everything assembled and ready for the rail to slip on.

Not quite lined up…. This is not hard but the rail is a VERY tightly machined slip fit, so it does not want to rotate much even before the cross bolts are tightened. I utilized a scope mount clamped across the gap to get things aligned as advised in the instructions and it came together nicely.

Now for some glamour shots. i am trying to emulate some funky Stickgunner inspired shots!

really like this one!

Ready to go!!!

All it needs now is a headspace check..anyone want to loan me the tools? Although I suspect it is good to go.

Overall I am very impressed with this combo, the rail is awesome, and it feels perfect in my hand and for the grip I use. I am psyched about running this for CQB in 2014 and hope to see as many of you out as Borden as possible.

Cheers,

B

If you're only doing one build these probably aren't worth buying it but if you do more than a couple they're worth their weight in gold. I've installed literally dozens of gas blocks and never messed one up using these punches.

I have the punches but not the roll pin holder for this. Makes it way easier to get them started I am sure! The pin in the top picture was fine no marring bit of a pain to get it started and then the roll pin punch fed it right in.

Where I struggled was on the noveske cross pin through the gas block and barrel. Shown where the roll pin punch is through it in the lower picture above. It is not a normal taper pin like on a front sight base which are both tapered and rounded on the end. It is a straight pin, with two flat ends and is basically a tight friction fit. Not sure the right tool for that, but my taper pin punch started to lose the battle.

I did not show the after picture of that, but it was not that bad, but took some persistence to get it going. The combination of the tight fit and the rounded gas block made it hard to hit it with much force straight on.

I can happily say though that is is not going anywhere!!!

That's a very nice looking rail. I really like the profile of the gun when it's installed. Just wondering why you didn't stay with the black colour scheme?

I wanted to break up the solid black look and thought this would fit well, I like that it is a kind of two tone look.

Got my 5.56 gauges from Brownells.

Closed on the "GO" gauge and would not close on the "NO GO" gauge, so .... I am good to go to get this baby fired up!! Looking forward to the season!!

Try some needle nosed vice grips. With some pins you can get them started in the hole by simply squeezing them together and friction fitting them into the hole. If not, compress the pin about a 1/4" in and align with the hole and a simple tap will get it started.
