The twins are finally finished!!!!!!
They have some things in common that I’ll describe first
- the stocks are Black Walnut from the Arrow Lakes area of the Kootenays. Apparently the tree was felled just prior to the flooding and submerged for a number of years. It was salvaged in the 80’s and milled. I bought the semi-inletted blanks from Don Robinson (Kelowna) at the Kamloops Gun Show last March. The wood is quite heavy–about the same weight as an equivalent laminate.
- steel grip caps from Dressels of Washington state
- ebony fore-end tips
- glass bedded and with internal cross-bolts behind the recoil lugs and behind the magazine boxes
- all metal was slow rust blued
- 1” Pachmayr Old English Decelerator recoil pads
- 2-position M70 style safeties
The first rifle is a 9.3X62 Mauser built on an Oberndorf Brazilian 1908 Mauser action and a 24” Bevan King barrel (1-12 twist). The barrel was profiled to approximate the Douglas #2 profile (.600” muzzle diameter). It has a Dayton-Traister trigger. The scope is a Leupold VariX-II 3-9X40 with 2 piece Leupold bases and Leupold rings. It weighs 9.5lbs all up.
I fired the rifle for the first time last week but problems with the Warne bases cut things short(the front base holes were off-center). With the new rings/bases I fired the first group this morning, which measured 0.60”. I’m using RL15, 270 gr Speer semi-spitzers, Norma brass and CCI200 primers.
Velocities were
- 57 gr, 2396fps
- 58 gr, 2433fps
- 59 gr, 2504fps
No adverse pressure signs.
Corlane Sporting Goods (Rocky Mountain Rifles) in Dawson Creek, BC did all of the metal work(d&t, profile barrel, chamber/thread/crown/install barrel, lap lugs, square receiver) and I am very happy with their work.
All metal and wood finishing was done in-house.
The second rifle is a .35 Whelen built on an early 50’s FN Mauser with a 23” #2 profile Douglas Premium barrel (1-12 twist). This one has a Timney trigger. The scope is a Leupold VarX-II 2-7X33 with one-piece Leupold base and Leupold rings. It weighs 8.5 lbs all up.
I’ve had this rifle since about 1998. This is it’s fourth stock!!
Both rifles
