So, I've always wanted a Glock 17, but the only time I got a chance to shoot either one, YEEEARS ago, I wasn't too impressed with the way it fit the hand. However, that was only the second time I'd ever fired a pistol, with no real pistol training or experience, and it was a "Buy 50 rounds, blast away at a zombie target, look cool for your friends" situation. I've gone a lot beyond that point in terms of experience , so I'm willing to give Glock another try.

I'm interested in the Gen 4 series, simply because I've heard that a lot of people like the fit much more, but I'm open to Gen 3's as well. (since I don't actually know what model I fired...) I have two questions;

1) Where, in the Ottawa area, can I go to fondle Glocks? I really need to get my mitts on one to make a decision.

2) What does CGN's collective hive-mind think about the Gen 4? Are there any problems with them, serial numbers I should avoid, are they God's gift to shooters?

Gen4's are good to go. I don't really care about the removable back straps but really like the improved mag release.

Mine have many a thousands of rounds thru them with zero issues. I use a Gen4 34 for IDPA.

If you belong to a range, there is likely someone there who has a Glock, and is willing to let you fondle it, and maybe even shoot it.

It's a glock, the grip feels like a big, blocky 2x4 compared to other handguns in the same category. But you get used to it. The big improvement of the Gen4 in my opinion is the grip texture. It really keeps the gun solidly in your hand. All handguns should rip it off- er... implement that feature immediately.

Gen4s also have the new recoil spring system which apparently lengthens the life of the part, which is nice.

Hmm, so I got the chance to fondle a Gen4 G34 today. The pistol still feels awkward to me. It's light as hell, but the weight difference between the slide and pistol grip really feels... wrong, somehow. It might be personal bias on my part. I'm used to Browning Hi-Powers and, to a lesser extent, Sigs and 1911's. Maybe I just want more weight.

The grip does feel a lot more ergonomic, though.

Oh, well, the search will continue. I'll see if I can pester someone to let me shoot their Glock at the range sometime.

G17 and 34's are essentially the same weight witht the slide cut on the 34.

I agree (and own one) about the HP feeling great in the hand, now the trigger..

You could visit the RA Centre as a guest and shoot some there..

they have some Glocks @ That Hunting & Fishing Store in Richmond if you want to handle one. They recently started carrying restricted's, and actually have a pretty decent selection of pistols. Try the Steyr M9-A1 on for size while you're there....it will melt into your hand. I own a Gen 4 G17 and G21....but you really can't go wrong with any generation. They have more mods and accessories available than a Honda Civic.
