I have been waiting to see what GD is coming out with the NSGW because their plastic cased ammo is probably the most promising of the bunch. The Textron CT sounds good on paper but the rotating chamber needed for CT makes the rifle version very bulking, an absolute ergonomic nightmare.

It has been rumoured GD had a bullpup and the promo is finally released. They end up having the same platform for both the carbine and the AR, versus Textron and SIG both have a carbine and a belt fed. I got a feeling GD may come out ahead of SIG and Textron. The SIG MCX modified is too short for 6.8 if the US military needs the ammo to defeat ceramic plates. It needs the velocity if it needs to has some useable AP range I think this is the reason GD goes with a bulpup, that is the only way to have a maneuverable "battle rifle" and a long enough barrel to get the velocity.

On the other hand, I am not quite sure a battle rifle sized mag fed automatic rifle - it is going back to the C2 / Bren gun days. Unlike a 5.56 M27 it can't even have a 30 round mag. The problem is that the SIG Belt Fed is too big as a AR/SAW, but the Textron version has some weird ergonomics.

So apparently GD got Beretta USA to make the weapons. SIG vs Beretta again!

That chubby flash can/suppressor has my attention.
Looks like they are thinking way ahead, for when we will be fighting from mechanized aerial drop ships.

It needs to defeat level 4 plates right? So, why are they wasting time with caseless/telescoped/plastic ammo?

Because of 35-40% overall weight reduction, so if the enemy carries 400 rounds of conventional ammunition, our soldiers will be able to fire back 600 rounds of reduced weight ammunition.
I'm always amazed by the fact that combat veteran who know almost about firearms know the precise weight of a rifle, a loaded magazine, a box of ammunition and a filled canteen!
For thousands of years, the infantryman wants to carry a 40 pound pack but it always ends up as an 80 pound pack.

Oops, forgot my comment about the firearms: did the designers or design committee ever use or even picked up a rifle ?!?!?!
My feeling is that this committee design will get crushed by another design for a brilliant designer/tinkerer à la John Garand and Eugene Stoner.

The orignal Chrysler MiniVan looks and probably handles better ;)

If they want a long barrel to reach the velocity needed to defeat armour at longer range without having a very high pressure cartridge, bullpup is a solution.

We cannot fight with FN FAL these days anymore - M16A2 was long gone, the US simply won't go back to 20" barrel MBR.

I don't know how long the barrel the SIG has, but I read somewhere it is working at much higher pressure than the current SAMMI for usre.

At the end of the day, I think the LMG/AR will have a chance to become reality. I have my doubt the carbine/rifle is viable. Marksmanship won't get better, the extended range is wasted, and there is not enough ammo to do fire and moment without excessive bulk on the body. The Brits had that issue in Falkland - it is not just weight, but volume too. The lesson was also relearnt by the US with SCAR 17.
