I got to thinking, and picking up spent shells kinda sucks, I don't have a fancy trap gun, I use a pump, I know I could be careful and pump slow and collect the shell and all that, but I just want to shoot. After your done and there's a pile of shells, couldn't you use this to collect them? I just tried it on a brass shell and it seems that at least the primer is magnetic.

I thought of this after shooting this weekend at the range. there were large puddles and lots of mud. I also have a fairly stiff back, and picking up 200 shells after a few hours of fun would be a lot easier this way no?

Several guys at our club are using similar gadgets to pick up hulls. As you noted the brass-cased premium hulls are a little tricky because only the primer is steel but the magnets work very well with the steel case heads used in the less expensive shells. I use one with a telescoping handle that was bought at Princess Auto.

Takes like a second to grab the shell out of a pump. In fact I pump mine right into a pouch on my side and don't touch them. Pumps are all I use now for trap and skeet and the only hulls that ever hit the ground is the 1st one on doubles. If you were firing 28ga you don't leave those puppies fly free.

Dumb question but do any of you reload 12G?? or just picking up hulls to keep it clean/protect the environment or any other reason?
Not trying to be funny I am curious if there is a reloading bunch here for 12G also?

Not many reload 12 gauge target loads unless you want something different. I do because I like the recoil reduction of a 7/8 ounce load. 3MACS1, I hear you on those 28 gauge hulls. When I use my 1100 it sends those little guys to the next county! Makes me appreciate the tube set in my 3200

Ahhhhhhhhh, thanks for insight - makes sense.
I guess the price of factory target loads is pretty cheap not worth reloading?

I shoot 50-50 reloads to factory. The reasion to pick up hulls is that increasingly clubs are requesting/requiring it. Years ago it used to be that all hulls on the ground belonged to the club but these days fewer shooters are reloading and instead using low-cost loads like Super Target, Top Gun and Gun Club. The magnets and other devices make picking up hulls easier particularly out in the bush shooting sporting clays.

X2! Shoot, and as you pump the gun with your left handhold your right hand over the ejection port and she drops right in there!
If you want to shoot doubles continually however, you can get one of those cheap O/U field guns made in Turkey that one member here likes to bash all the time.
None of mine have ever broken like he says they do, I doubt if he has even fired one , by the way he runs them down!

At the place I use to work we had to go around and clean up all the shooting facilities at the end of the day( total of 10 possible spots). It was a real pain in the ass to pick up hulls so all we used were those magnet brooms. We only allowed kent at our facility except for one tournament where it was only winchester AA (a particular American members request/demand). The magnet brooms would not pick up the winchester and there were thousands of hulls all over the place. It was a nightmare
