I'm pretty sure they put those rules in to avoid any possible loopholes later on. A big one is the idea of a nice two tone or stripes where from the shooter's eye the coloring or stripes guide his sight picture more quickly. They made the rule pretty much a closed door to avoid any possible scenario that they didn't cover with stripes and other ornamentation.
But if you refinish the gun in the orignal colour scheme then no one is going to say "boo".
You can't change the colour or add stripes or other ornamentation on IDPA guns either for the same reasons.
Those rules aren't there to piss people off, they are there to ensure that no one ups the anty by coming up with something that sneaks through the rules and gains them an advantage.
