German Bayonet

Hello,

My father has given me a few different bayonets and I am hoping to learn more about them in the hope that I may someday purchase the appropriate rifle that they would have been used with.

This one is important to me because my family emigrated from Germany after the first world war.

It is marked Simson & Co SUHL with the serial number 2483. These are the only markings I have been able to find. Here are some pictures:

Any information that can be provided is appreciated. In particular I would like to know what sort of rifle this would have been issued with. I am guessing a Gewehr 98 but I am not certain.

What you have is a Seitengewehr model 1898.

Are there are Imperial german acceptance marks on the spine and on the pommel (gothic letter with a crown over top) ?. The date mark would also be on the spine as well just forward of the hilt.

The "2483" is likely an inventory or contract number.

If these marks are not present, the bayonet is likely a contract bayonet or a dress bayonet private purchase.

If it is a contract bayonet, I have a feeling it may be from a Persian mauser.

Hi Nabs, Thank you very much for the info. This is very helpful. There are no marks on the spine. I dont' know what a contract bayonet is but a private purchase is understandable. A search for Seitengewehr was very helpful and found several examples of quill style bayonets from several German manufacturers so it seems these were made by a few factories.

I did an image search for Persian Mauser bayonets but didn't find any of the quill style like mine. They all seem to have straight blades.

The proper gun for this bayonet is a Gewehr 98 correct?

Could be for a Peruvian Mauser. Check the back of the pommel for a coat of arms.
