Anyone know what this is ?

It has an octagonal barrel with a raised ramp at 12 O'clock with wavy scrolling on the ramp. There is non descript decorative scrolling on the other metal work as well. The only other visible markings include a crown with an "N" under it, the word GERMANY, part of another crown, 18.35 Gr, m, Lt, and what looks like a small crucifix.
It was given to an uncle of mine along with a box of ammunition. Ammo box reads:
"Manufactured at the Kynoch factories of imperial chemical industries Ltd. Metals Division, Witton, Birmingham England". Calibre = 9mm M KYNOCH.
Now, the under side of the barrel on this rifle is stamped "8.9mm" !
My guess is that this is a German Mauser. Is anyone out there familiar with this rifle ? Is the 9 mm ammo that came with it really safe to fire from it ? Last but not least, any ideas what this might be worth ? Is it just another old rifle or would a collector be interested in it ?
