getting a 223, opinions please

My own .223 is a Remington 700 SPS "Varmint" with the 26" heavy barrel...
With my reloads, 40gr molycoated Vmax with 20gr of IMR4198, I put 5 consecutive shots inside a nickle sized hole at 100 meters, using my bi-pod and my shoulder with no rear rest.
I'm going to give my .204 a break this year and use the .223 more.

I don't know the other brands you mention and I can only comment on the remmy...I like mine.

I like the Remington SPS Varmint .223 in concept, which is why I bought one. It feels good, and shoots well.

A couple of complaints though. When I got to the range, the bolt was sometimes VERY tight to close, and I passed it off as being new and needing to be worked in, but you had to slide it forward and down all in one quick motion with authority, otherwise the bolt would be stuck up and a little back, and VERY hard to push down.

When I got home, I noticed a LOT of brass shavings on the bolt face, and underneath the roughly finished bolt (from sliding on the cartridges still in the magazine. I don't know if the latter was the source for all the brass shavings, or if it was shaving it off the cartridge base as well. I haven't been back to the range with it yet to test if the brass shavings were also the reason for the very hard to close bolt.

This was very disappointing to me because I otherwise like the style, and how it feels when shooting. :(

Don't get a vtr, they are stupid. A Remington SPS Varmint is a good choice if you want to shoot light bullets. Its a 12 twist so anything under 55 grains should shoot ok. I have the 204 version and really like it.

The savage predator has a 1:9 twist so you could shoot heavy bullets like the 69g SMK or even 75g AMAX possibly. The predator has a medium contour so you can still shoot it more and it will be a little easier to carry. Also has a drop mag.

I like both Savage and Remington rifles so it would come down to what your preference is as afr as price and features.

My brother has a savage predator (in 22-250 but we are discussing guns not calibre) and it is really good. Shoots sub moa. I would say if u get one the first thing you should do is stop at canadian tire and get some spray on clear cote and do the bottom of the mag. the cammo was chipping of my brothers but the clear cote fixed that.

MagnumPeanut says: " Don't get a vtr, they are stupid. "

Very profound

They are "profoundly" stupid.

1:9 twist 20" triangle barrel if you minus the brake. So I guess we want to shoot heavy bullets with the 9 twist for long range shooting right, but only have a 20 in barrel so the velocity is cut so we can no longer shoot long distance, right. It is a stupid combination. Even if the barrel was 22" plus brake it would be much better.

And whats with the Toblerone barrel?

What do you want the gun for? Hunting/plinking/competition? If you tell us what your planning on using it for, we can help point you in the right direction! I would get the T3 from the options you have posted. Don't shoot all those rounds I sold you in one day!:p

I looked at all the options and ended up with a CZ527. Far as I know it is the only or one of the only MiniMausers actually designed to fit a 223 case. Sure is a nice little rifle and accurate as all get out. I could have bought a lot cheaper but couldnt find one that had both DM and leftie bolt. Aside from that the MiniMauser mech intrigued me too. That said, I like the way CZ builds their rifles. Have 3 now. Big happy.

I ordered myself a CZ 527 M1 American synthetic, but I'm still awaiting delivery of it. I ordered this rifle because I can't see myself having a nice little 223 in an over-sized action, and the CZ M1 offered that in a package that I can live with from the factory. As far as the rifle goes, in 6 months, I'll either hate it and want to get rid of it, or I'll love it so much, that Ill never get rid of it; there is no in between for me.

Just an FYI. Since it is a downsized action the actual gun CZ527 American weighs in at 5.9lbs. I knew it was light compared to my Ruger 30-06 but it hefts a lot better too. 21.9in barrel too FYI. Almost feels like shooting a 22lr.
After checking the CZ site it turns out my CZ452 22lr is also 5.9lbs. Imagine that!!! Ok so that was a surprise. (I checked the CZ site while I was writing this note)
