Getting a Resricted weapon?

OK I want to get a hangun, so If once i get my resricted pal can i right away apply to get a longterm ATT if i joing a gun club without owning a gun so that when i do buy a handgun i can bring it home faster?
 
If you are in ON, the ATT application goes in through the club, and you will have to be a member in good standing before that happens. Incidentally, if you are considering getting into handgun shooting, there is no such thing as a restricted weapon. There are restricted firearms, though.
 
Weapons don't come in restricted form. Try to say it out loud, do you know how funny that sounds?

Firearms, however, have different types of classifications including Restricted type.

Long term ATT from a club does not cover bringing your firearm home from a store. The store that sold you the gun have to apply for a temp. ATT for you to bring the firearm home.
 
What We Did

This is the sequence of things for me and my wife:

  1. Go out to an "open range day" at your local club or a club you might like to join.
  2. Make some friends and fire a few different pistols. Bring an open mind and expect to be corrected. Ranges are very formal and you need to listen and learn, and not get hung up on making mistakes. You will and are expected to.
  3. If you don't have your PAL and Restricted, go take a course and send in your application. Once it is approved and you have your "Purlple Happy Card":
  4. Join a club and make more friends
  5. Research and buy a safe or gun locker to safely store your pistol and ammo when you do finally purchase
  6. Buy a pistol based on what you like and the advice of your new friends. If you buy it from a dealer (recommended) they will handle the ATT you require to take the pistol from the store to your home. This ATT cannot be used for ANY OTHER PURPOSE. See below
  7. Take your club safety course. This is comprised of a classroom section, where you handle pistols, and a practical section where you are at the range handling and firing loaded pistols
  8. After your club is satisfied with your results on the safety course, YOUR CLUB will arrange an ATT that will allow you to trasnport your pistol to the ranges that belong to your club, and any other CERTIFIED range in Ontario that you are invited to or are shooting a match at. You will learn more details on ATT's during your clubs safety course.
  9. Have fun shooting and making even more friends! And be prepared to go broke getting, among other things:

    Shotguns (yah, you just want to shoot pistols now, but just wait)
    Rifles (yah, you just want to shoot pistols now, but just wait)
    Reloading Equipment
    Holsters
    belts
    mags

    Bling
    etc
    etc
    etc

    And just for reference, put your location in your profile, it helps us help you with local resources etc.

its a funny little thing we have here in Canada. MIlitary personel say " weapon" or weapon system.... sport shooters refer to guns as " firearms".

A weapon is something used for " killing", while a " firearm" is used for sport.

Its a lame little technicality.

call it what you will, just keep it clean and your shots well placed.
 
A firearm is not a weapon? Give me a break. You guys sound like a bunch of delegates at a liberal party caucus meeting with all that politically correct BS. Guns are weapons and there is absolutely nothing wrong with allowing civilians to own weapons. That's why concealed carry permits in the U.S. are called Concealed Carry Weapon permits, not Concealed Carry Firearm permits.

If the word "weapon" makes you cringe perhaps you should pick another hobby.

As for your restricted whatever purchase. Have fun and enjoy shooting. Good luck.
 
Under the law there are non-restricted firearms, restricted firearms, prohibited firearms, and prohibited devices. There are no restricted weapons. The question was about how to get involved with handgun shooting. If it turns your crank to talk about your weapons, fine. But the law pertaining to categories of firearms does not use the term.
Incidentally, if you have a CCW permit, and are carrying a firearm, you are carrying it as a weapon.

I think we here all know what word best applies to our guns... (friend, protector, secret lover) and it's only to the public that we should maintain the whole firearm-tool vs weapon-toy terminology.

HEHE, yeah i want a hangun....but the day my PAL comes in I'll be buying 3 rifles and Shotgun :)
Must kill gophers...I have an Issue with them they caused me to twist my ankle at work last year. Also i want a rifle to keep in my truck when i'm working in the bush. And i strongly beleave everyone should have a Shotgun.

As for the safe thats not a problem just have to go pick one up from a friend who bought a better one.

Now i just hope the CFC gives me my PAL, Dont see why they shouldn't I have a clean Record, but with the way the government is you never know.

No. Concealed carry (and, in some states, open carry) permits are only necessary for weapons that could not be carried otherwise. As far as I know, there are no laws prohibiting people from carrying knives, so there’ no need for a permit.
