Getting a SA only pistol..

If I purchase a SA only pistol.... like a Limited Custom from Tan.
Am I limiting myself to what kind of sport shooting I can do? Will I find myself stuck in a certain class because of the pistol?

Or should I look for a DA/SA to make it easier to shoot in different classes.

Or do I know nothing ... :)

Don't want to spend $2K on a pistol and mags to find out I can't shoot with beginners.... I am a newbie you know...:cool:
 
My preference here is a good double action, S&W 'N' frames are my preference.
22 LR-Ruger Mk II 5.5 inch bull barrel
38 Special-Heavy Duty Pre-Model 20 & Colt Model 357
44 Special-624 with 6.5 inch barrel
44 Magnum-629 DX Classic & Colt Anaconda & Dan Wesson Model 44, with 8 inch barrel
45 ACP-Colt 1991A1 (1911) & S&W Model 1937 Brazilian in same calibre

80% of the time I shoot 44 special & 38 special....
Double action revolvers are excellent especially for training beginners IMHO.

If one gets into action shooting, most shooters these days will pick a semi-auto, just for a slightly more rapid reload. However, some will use a S&W 625, pretty fast reload with moon clips in 45 ACP.

If you have a Tan LC you are in IPSC Standard Division.

Plenty of beginners in that division.

If you go DA/SA you are in production division........even more newbies in there of late.

The question is where do you want to end up? Which type of gun do you prefer?

If the answer (like me) is a single action.........then get a single action.

A DA/SA is not really like a beginners model. It is just a different class of firearm. Heck I have seen people start with an Open Gun.

I do not know enough about the *DPA rules to comment on where a LC would fall in terms of divisons but it is not really a very concealable firearm due to the large magwell.
 
IF you're talking IPSC, a DA/SA will be outgunned in anything but the production division, so it's of no use for different divisions.

As for other shooting disciplines; more than likely the SA is OK, but you're going to get categorized for other options like bull barrels and overall weight of the gun.

If you're looking at a Tan LC, as Storm said, you're in IPSC Standard - and don't worry - there are plenty of newbies that start in that division too.
 
If you are into action shooting for the fun and doin't expect to give Todd or Rob a run for their money anytime soon AND would like to have as many options as you can then take a look at a D/A. S/A gun in .40cal.

You may not be as competitive in all the divisions as you might otherwise be (Debatable being a new shooter, other performances issues will effect your scoring more than the gun you are shooting).

With a 40,Cal D/A, S/A gun you could shoot"

SSP - gun cannot weigh more than 39 oz
ESP - gun cannot weigh more than 43 oz.

As Sean alluded to, in IDPA you have weight issues to deal with in the two divisions. For ESP coned barrels are allowed for guns with a barrel length of less than 4.2".

A 9MM gun which is much less expensive to shoot (Unless you reload), works in all of the above divisions as well, though I doubt factory ammo will make major for IPSC Limited.

For around $600 you can get a Glock or S&W M&P in 9MM. Shoot your heart out in IPSC Production and/or IDPA SSP and have a blast in either sport. Decide if you like action shooting, talk to the guys/gals and decide where you want to be. You will get most of your money back from either gun on the used market if at sometime you want to specialize in another division or don't like action shooting.

9mm is not allowed for major in IPSC standard or USPSA Limited. Only in Open, production where there is no major, and revolver. All other divisions require .40 minimum to make major.
 
Bob, USPSA has a division similiar to Standard division in Canada,...it is called Limited -10,...10rd mag limit (think; lots of mag changes),..major or minor scoring,...(major is 165 pf in USPSA),..but the gun and mags can be out front. (at least what I saw in my only USPSA match) same guns.
Standard division the gun must fit the box.
 
I should no that by now. Will shoot USPSA in August - wanna bet I get them reversed down there.:D

I should add the Tafoglio Sport is a great pistol for Production and SSP/ESP in IDPA. One of the guys has one and does quite well with it.

I could get a Limited Pro. That si listed as DA/SA and classed as Production..

now this 9mm vs. .40cal. Crap. I wanted to get a 9mm.... less than $300 a case of 1000. What does .40 go for? $350+ a case.....

What is major anyway...lol
