It might kill your ears before it kills a moose.

I have an L61R in .338 that's been shortened to 21", and it's plenty loud enough. I like that it's short and light, but that nasty muzzle blast is definitely a downside. At 18", it would be fun to watch in the dark.

My idea is to devellop a load for an 18 inch barrel with a 300 gr quality bullet and try to find a powder that will give me 2400 + fps, that should be a speed permiting great accuracy to 500 metres and tremendous hitting power, i will see what kind of results i will obtain but if succesfull that could be a perfect hunting combo... JP.

That might work - I'm a big fan of heavy bullets and modest velocity myself. I ended up with a very accurate load using 250 gr. Nosler Partitions and it's all I've ever used in that rifle since.

I got a New Sako Kodiak .338 with the 21 1/4" barrel. Have not shot it yet but it sure feels good

That is likely one of the hardest recoiling rifles I've ever shot. I had one in .338 and .375 and the .338 was very unpleasant to shoot....the 375 not so bad. I'm not sure if it was a combination of stock style and the short barrel or it just didn't fit me well but I didn't keep it long. It did shoot incredibly well though.

Being a great fan of the Alliant Reloader serie powder, ( i use them for all my rifles and have many pounds of each), i believe that a maximum load compressed of R-19 top by a 300 gr SMK, with a long OAL will achieve 2400 fps out of an 18 inch barrel... The R-19 will improve velocity enough to do it... JP.

Savage advertises that barrel as 20", not an 18".

I've been waiting for the Ruger M77 guide rifle to get here. 20" barrel with irons and M77mkII action, available in 338win among other rounds.
